Dear summerdawn--

I know MUCH better than to try to estimate when books will either be finished or published (two different things) <g>--but fwiw, my plans for when I get my regular writing routine back (I.e., after Thanksgiving) include SCOTTISH PRISONER, RED ANT'S HEAD (or whatever it ends up being called), BOOK EIGHT (the feeling-my-way-in part, at least), and the COMPANION, Volume II (it's always nice to have a nonfiction project to switch off to now and then).  MIGHT finished PRISONER and/or ANT in 2010, but no guarantees whatever.  (And they wouldn't be published before 2011, even if I do.)

Dear Danyun (and nifty)--

The order of the Lord John stories is:

Hellfire Club - short story

PRIVATE MATTER - novel  (but written under the impression that it was a short story <g>)

Succubus - novella

BROTHERHOOD OF THE BLADE - novel

Haunted Soldier - novella

The Custom of the Army - novella (to be published this March in an anthology titled WARRIORS)

SCOTTISH PRISONER (not yet written)

Have you read the forum rules?

Because this post of yours violates them, big time.

In fact, I think it's been a long time since I've seen such a blatant no-go here.

But I'll leave it to Karen to wield her gavel, lest any one accuses me of abusing mine.

Dear nifty--

Jeff Woodman is _great_.   Davina Porter is marvelous, of course--but she can't really do more than an approximation of the male voices, while Jeff has Lord John almost _exactly_ the way I hear him (of course, he has the same difficulty with the female voices, but given Lord John's milieus, there isn't a great deal of female material--and all his male voices are terrific:  I LOVE the way he does Harry Quarry and Tom Byrd, for instance. <G>).

I'm not about to get between you and Barbara, <g> but I will just note that she's about 24 hours away from finishing the translation of ECHO, probably hasn't slept more than three or four hours a night for the last month or two--and probably feels just as possessive/protective of all these stories as I do.

However--we really don't allow ad hominem attacks.   You can tell Barbara you think her opinions are insufferable <g>, but you can't say _she_ is.

Nifty:

About that "insufferable" comment:  Barbara and Diana are absolutely right.  Personal attacks are against forum rules, and this was a pretty blatant violation of those rules.

From the Forum Rules (located on the forum home page here):

"(5) While discussions understandably grow heated at times, we ask that members try to correspond in a friendly and good-mannered fashion. Please try to focus on the issues, not on your correspondent. Attack the message, not the messenger! For example, it is permissible to call an idea a "lie." Calling your correspondent a "liar," however, is a personal attack and not permitted. Similarly, you may consider an idea foolish, but we don't allow posts in which one member calls another a fool."

Please don't do that again!

Karen

As in you're running on two hours sleep, or you may be finished in two hours?

OT: Did you translate a book by Alan Bradley for Blanvalet titled Mord im Gurkenbeet?  Just curious...

Both (re: two hours. In fact, for the last five days, I've been taking ten-minute naps every two or three hours). But I'm also two hours away from the finishing line.

And, no. The last book I translated was one of Jack Whyte's, and then ECHO.

Most gratifying piece of work, ever!

Karen,

But isn't telling someone not to come here and cheat the same as calling that person a cheater?  If not, it's a pretty fine line.

My apologies, then, for violating the rules.  Guess it was the "this topic riles me...don't come here and cheat" comment of Barbara's that set me off.  After all, if the lie/liar example is to be used to illustrate the parameters of the rule, certainly cheat/cheater could  be used just as well.  See, to me THAT seemed like an ad hominem attack directed at me personally, since I'm the one who started the thread.  Were I able to edit my previous post and remove my offensive language, I would do so.  Perhaps Barbara -- as moderator for the board; that is what the gavel next to her name indicates, correct? -- or you could do so for me.  Thanks.

It just occurred to me to add a spoiler warning to this thread, just in case someone _hasn't_ read the LJ books and now decides that they want to.

Dear Diana-

I've never been an audio book kind of gal, but the idea of listening to Lord John almost as you hear him.... I'm searching Amazon as I type. <bg> Besides, several hours of male British accent?  How can a girl go wrong?

Is Woodman's Jamie almost as you hear him?  Because _that_ would have me melting into a big fizzy puddle right there.

Hope you managed to store up some hand massages over the weekend!

Hi Diana,

Was the eel excerpt from Custom or Haunted Soldier (just trying to place the timing of the stories in my mind)?

Er ... when I talked to you, I answered your questions.

I was neither talking _to_ you, nor about you, when I voiced those regrets.

And I think saying that you may cheat yourself out of a wonderful reading experience if you don't read the LJ books may fall under the header of voicing a regret.

SPOILER for Custom of the Army

Custom.  Actually, it's hinted at in EITB at the very beginning of Ch 41 "Shelter from the Storm", when William's talking to Denzell Hunter about Lord John's acquaintence.  (Made me go 'ooh! so _that's_ where Custom falls into the continuity' when I read it, cuz I'm a dork like that <g>)

Was wondering if anyone can tell me if there are any other characters in Echo besides Percy that were originally introduced through Lord John's books?

Thanks, and hope this is the right thread for the question.

Hi Deb,

Well, we meet Hal in the Outlander series initially, but we find out much more about him and his relationship with John in the LJG books - their mom Benedicta I think we meet in the LJG books first, as well as John's nieces and nephews.  There are other characters that figure prominently in the LJG books that haven't yet appeared in the Outlander books.  Harry Quarry appeared in Echo, but I can't remember if he appeared only in the LJG books or also the other Outlander books.  I'm sure others will correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi Bedelia

Just my thought on this since Barbara was responding to my post.  In defence of Barbara - on very little sleep, I wouldn't even be able to think of words, much less be able to translate to another language.  I'd be spouting Deutch-glish!

However I saw and read her statement to mean - you won't get all the answers here, and to try to do so will result in depriving you of the enjoyment of discovery as you read the books yourself.  I'd say that is a fair comment.

Certainly did not see it as directed personally, but rather to anyone who hasn't fully taken that opportunity yet.  I think in this sense you are taking the word  for its more negative meaning rather than in the spirit of reading the last chapter of a book to find the ending, before reading the whole book.

This has been a great thread, and has been enlightening.  And I imagine most will go back and read/reread to become more acquainted with the characters.

We glimpsed Harry Quarry briefly in Voyager at Ardsmuir.  Isobel, who's mentioned in Echo, is in BOTB, as are the Dunsany's, and Dottie is just born in that book.  There's more of Minnie, Hal's wife, in the LJ books.  So far Percy, Hal, and to a lesser degree Harry are the only people who have major screen time (page space?) in both series.
