10 Things to Do Before You Get Swine Flu

The H1N1 flu, commonly called swine flu, is expected to make many people sick this flu season. And if you're one of them, you're in for some serious at-home time, recovering and sparing other people from your germs.  To make that time a little easier on yourself, consider taking these 10 steps now, before you come down with swine flu.

  1. Make a backup plan
  2. Butter up your friends
  3. Stock up on supplies
  4. Stock up on comfort foods
  5. Be good to your hands
  6. Stock up o DVDs and books
  7. Know your risk
  8. Dig out your tape measure
  9. Put your doctor on speed dial
  10. Know when it's an emergency

How do you know if it's an emergency?  Click HERE for suggestions from WebMd.com.

Have you or any of your friends and family been affected by the H1N1 virus?  Do you plan to get vaccinated?  Do you usually get a flu shot each year?

I've been more worried about my dd, who is in her freshman year off at college.  A bunch of kids in her dorm have been ill, and she's getting her seasonal flu shot this week.  They plan to go dorm-to-dorm with the H1N1 vaccine when it becomes available.

I don't blame you for being worried.  College kids are very susceptible to flu bugs and viruses going around.  One of Corey's friends had the swine flu.  Fortunately, none of the other kids in the class caught it.  His mother kept him home the rest of the week, even past the 48 hour recommendation.  The child's dad also came down with it.  So far, those have been the only outbreaks around here that I'm aware of.

I'm not at all worried about it.  I've had worse things - meningitis comes to mind.  There are 2 weeks of my life that I have no idea what happened I was so out of it and it took me a couple of months to recover - lieterally.

I don't worry about stocking up, my pantry and freezers are always full anyway.  Stuff like milk, I always keep on hand the dry stuff in case we get snowed in or a mountain blows. TP, I have probably about 2 months or so in storage, and with family right across the street and more right down the road, I am lucky and really don't have to worry about anything.

I never knew you had meningitis.  How old were you when you got it?

You have an advantage, for sure, doing your own canning, etc.  That would come in handy big time in case of emergency or illness.

I suppose I overly worry due to her Crohn's disease and its effect on her immune system.  Same with my husband (who also has Crohn's AND is a schoolteacher).  But, you have to get out and you have to breathe, so you just do your best to stay healthy!

It was 10 years ago.  Talk about being miserable.  I wouldn't wish that on anyone even my worst enemy.  The doctor told me if I hadn't have driven myself to his office he would have hospitalized me.  It was really terrible.  I was passed out for 2 weeks at home waking up only to take more pain pills and antibiotics and moving from the bed to the couch.  Even those didn't take away the pain.  I really wish now that he had hospitalized me.

  1. Dig out your tape measure

Why do we do that? <g>

I am concerned about H1N1. I am more concerned about Dad and Mom catching it.I pray they wont. With them on and off going to doctor appointments, and dad back to the fitness center 1-2 2 days a week, you never know what germs are out there on doorknobs, handles, fitness equipment, or germs flying around in the air..ickkkk

This might sound silly, but I used a Clorox wet wipe, on a Fed Ex folder we got on Wednesday. About 4 times a week, I wipe off the doorknobs at home, the fridge handle, the island countertop. Recently I started wiping off our keys. As soon as I get home, I wash my hands in hot soapy water. I dont want us sick. But to get d/h to wash his hands, more often than he does already.......is like pulling teeth.

That doesn't sound silly at all.  We've been using the Clorox wipes around work too.  The receptionist comes 'round once a week and passes out wipes so we can wipe off our phones and keyboards.  I also have one of those small sample bottles of hand sanitizer that I got from Bath & Body.

Getting that flu is the last thing your parents need, with all they've been through this year.

I mustve missed this yesterday when I read the article. I agree with staying away from people at a 6 foot length is a good idea, of you have the swine flu.

8. Dig out your tape measure. If you get swine flu, you should stay at least 6 feet away from others to help them avoid getting sick. Check out how far away that is.

That works great for home, but I'm wondering about sick people in the store and at work, also in the elevator.  Hopefully, people are being more careful and more considerate by staying home when they are sick.

You poor thing!  Nora must have been a toddler.  Did you have help around the house or someone taking care of you?

I had just come back from vacation with my parents.  Nora was with.  She got sick 2 or 3 days before we were to leave Minnesota and then I got sick on the ride back from the airport.  My mom got sick the day before we left.  It was really weird in that it only hit the females, not the males, so my Dad never got sick, neither did Joe.

Joe didn't believe how sick I was until I passed out on him.  He thought I was just having a really bad migraine.   In fact, a migraine would have been a piece of cake compared to this.  He took me to emergency where they thought it was a migraine too and pumped me full of Demerol.  It didn't touch it.  They said that they couldn't give me any more and sent me home.  The next day with a very high fever and head feeling like it was going to explode I drove myself to the doctor.  Nora was getting over it so I think (I can't remember) so she went to my MIL.  The whole thing is still just so foggy that I don't know for sure what happened.  Mostly what I remember is waking up and going between the couch and the bed and taking the pills.  OH, and an IV at the doctors office.  Two months afterward I still wasn't up to par.  Very ditsy and not feeling like myself.  But I still wouldn't wish that on anyone.  It was just terrible.

I don't know if there was anyone here besides Joe.  I don't even know if Nora was around.  Still don't.  The whole thing is blank.

You poor thing!  I have some foggy moments of my own, so I know what you mean.

The most serious flu I had was in high school.  I was on the debate team and we were at an out-of-town tournament.  I told the coach I wasn't feeling well, but she made me keep going.  When my mom picked me up after the tournament, I had a fever of 106 and was out of school for over a week.  My best friend (and debate partner) was out sick all week too!  People thought we were playing hookey.

The next year, I stood out in the rain on a cold day b/c I wanted to catch a cold so I wouldn't have to take semester exams.  I got a cold alright - pneumonia - and was out of school two weeks.  I didn't feel that sick, other than the coughing, but I was contagious, so had to stay home.

Then the next year, I got mono.  The only symptom I had was that I was tired all the time and wanted to sleep a lot.

Since you've had meningitus, what do you think of the vaccine for it?

I am very pro-vaccine.  If there is a possibility to prevent, I'm there.

I can't understand why parents would not want to protect their children. Immunizing is a simple way to prevent most all childhood diseases.

We do the required vaccinations.  We don't do flu shots and my children haven't had the vaccine for meningititis.  I'm wary of any new vaccines as my daughter was part of the first group that had the chicken pox vaccine.  Consequently, she got chicken pox  which passed on to Zach (who was only 6 mos. old at the time) and me (I was 37 or 38).  I've also caught the flu from the flu vaccine.   So, I'm leary of the swine flu vaccine.

The meningitis vaccine came out around the same time as the chicken pox vaccine.  I talked with the pediatrician about it and he said it's okay not to get it now, but it would be a good idea for the kids to get it before they go away to college.

I get a flu shot each year since I work with the public and they don't know enough to stay home when they are sick!   I will get vaccinated again this year.  My Mom can't have the flu shot, which concerns me.  Her psoriasis flares up worse than normal if she has it, so they have stopped giving it to her.

I agree.  I wait for a while when a new vaccine comes on the market.  Nora never had the vericella one, she ended up having a light case of chicken pox before it came out.  But both Sean and Donavan have had it.  Its required here for school.

I've gotten the HPV one for Nora.  If I was young enough, I would get it myself.  I've gotten flu shots over the years, but they have gotten so expensive now that I don't bother.  Especially for me w/o insurance.

I got the HPV one for Heather as well.  Then this group of homeschooling moms posted a bunch of crap about it, saying there have been deaths related to it.  Well, that's the case with anything.  There's going to be someone that has an adverse reaction.  I'm sure the deaths will be less than those who die from cervical cancer when it could have been avoided.

I agree.  There are more women who would die with cervical cancer than those that get the shot.  I would say maybe a million to one.   It just drives me insane.

I have always had problems with the DPT injection.  So when I get it, its without the "D" (diptheria) But I still get the injection.  Just because the CDC has ruled that certain illnesses have been irradicated, doesn't mean that they still don't pop up from time to time.  If your not immunized, you will get it.  Personally, I would rather be protected against Polio than get it.  Especially since I had a cousin that died from it in the 50s.
