Prevent or Reduce Wrinkles

Some of my friends have had Botox injections, face lifts or other cosmetic procedures to eliminate facial wrinkles.  They say they want to look beautiful and it is no different than wearing makeup.

I have other friends who say beauty comes from within and they would never have any cosmetic procedures.  Nonetheless, they are always looking for lotions, foods or supplements that will reduce their wrinkling or prevent new wrinkling.

I think most products that promise to diminish wrinkling are simply marketing hype and are ineffective.  None that I've tried have worked.  However, some dermatologists think some products may actually help.  I heard one say that putting green tea on one's face may tighten up the skin.  Have any of you tried that?

Here are a few of the procedures that dermatologists told WebMD would prevent or reduce wrinkling.

  • Avoid the sun and wear sunscreen
  • Don't smoke
  • Get adequate sleep
  • Sleep on your back
  • Use moisturizer
  • Drink cocoa instead of coffee

Click here to learn how these and other procedures work.

Do any lotions or creams really help reduce wrinkling?  The dermatologists said that some actually do work.  Here are a few of those.

  • Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) lift off the top layer of dead skin cells and may stimulate collagen production.
  • Retin A is the only FDA-approved topical treatment for wrinkles.  It reduces fine lines and large wrinkles.
  • Topical vitamin C can stimulate collagen production.

Click here to learn more about these and other topical treatments.

Before I try to buy one of these topical treatments, I'd like to know if any of you have tried one of them?  Have any worked for you?  Have any of you tried other creams or lotions that have worked?

My beautician uses a line of cosmetics from South Africa called Environ with vitamin C and A and I must say that my skin looks good. Part of this is due to our climate, no extreme sunshine, lots of moisture in the air, but part of it, for sure are the products. They are not even ridiculously expensive. I never had cosmetic surgery, never felt the need for it. I do believe that not smoking, eating lots of fruit and vegetables, not too much alcohol and enough sleep and drinking lots of water helps.

The botox thing really freaks me out. Years ago, before it became a big cosmetic thing, my optometrist mentioned botox as a possible treatment for my eye. Basically, I have what amounts to a weak eye muscle on one side that means I can't turn my left eye to the left. Apparently, they can inject botox into the good eye muscle to kind of equalize the muscle with the bad one. Eeeee-uuuhhh! No thanks! (Besides, the injections have to be repeated every 6 months or so.)

Then, my mother had botox injections to calm a facial tic. Worked pretty well for her, but again, after a time it all has to be repeated.

So the idea of injecting botox (which is, remember, a derivative of botulism toxin) just to eliminate a few wrinkles seems just a tad extreme to me. But I stopped coloring my hair after seeing a few too many people here with obviously artificially dark hair and seriously old faces. (Not to meniton artificially whitened teeth.) I don't fancy looking like a circus clown. When you get older, you develop "character." That's how it's supposed to be.
Cheers,
Bev

Botox freaks me out too.  It's the botulism connection.  Restylin sounded good until I found out the price and the necessity for frequent injections.  I used to think that a face lift meant a tiny snip of the skin and pulling the rest tighter.  When I found out that they peeled the skin back off the face and did something to the muscles too, I lost interest in that.  Now if someone will tell me that putting green tea on my face will get rid of wrinkles, I'll try that.

I just learned that they also use botox to treat incontinence. They inject it into the bladder. Helps for a couple of months. A friend of mine who has Parkinsons had it twice now.

The basic principle of the botox is that it paralyzes the muscle it's injected into. For tics or incontinence, it kind of makes sense.

To eliminate wrinkles, the idea of running around with a frozen face sounds (to me, anyhow) worse than what you're trying to "cure." Wrinkles are laugh lines - hard fought and won. I'm certainly not out to destroy any indication that I've had a good laugh in my lifetime. <g>

BTW, I saw Phyllis Diller on the Leno show a week or two ago. She is 90 and has had more plastic surgery than probably any other living human. She looks just plain freaky - fat little body, but this perfectly smooth face, almost like she was wearing a mask. No thank you!
Cheers,
Bev

Getting an injection clear into the bladder sounds painful, but if it prevents incontinence, that's a benefit.  I had a friend who had surgery for that, but the cause of the incontinence may have been different.

With Parkinsons it is a little different, the bladder can not be operated, since the incontinence is regulated by the brain in this case. They do the botox procedure with a spinal block, but it needs to be done every 6 months.

A wonderful, wonderful book:  The Beauty Bible by Paula Begoun. Paula used to work in the cosmetics industry and became disgusted by all the hype women were being fed. This book is one of the best investments I ever made. If you want to sample some of Paula's work, see http://www.cosmeticscop.com  (I have no financial interest in Paula's work.)

I see a dermatologist every couple of years and based upon his recommendation I do this:

. Wash my face with Neutrogena Acne Wash (I don't have acne!), but it has a BHA acid in it that clears out the pores.

.  In the a.m., slather on suncreen (I use Oil of Olay).  I look for zinc oxide as a principal ingrediemtn.

.  At night, wash my face with Cetaphil (a nondetergent gentle cleanser)

.  Apply Renova either in the form of Affirm or Avage (both are availabe via presription.)  Only Renova (or other Retin A products have been shown to smooth out lines and build collagen.)

Another stressed out mom!

Joan, haven't there been some problems with Retin-A?  I just seem to remember reading or hearing about something.

Some people may develop flaking, but I think that is because folks tend to think if a little is good, more is better.  Retin-A is powerful stuff and you just need a pea sized amount.  And, since it is a drug, women who are planning on becoming pregnant or are pregnant should not use it.Another stressed out mom!

re: preventing wrinkles....our bodies are our vessel through out our lives how we take care of it depends on our life style....I am a vegan, daily yoga, swim in the ocean almost daily...I started using retna-a when I was 27...most people cannot believe how old I am (56) most think I am in my late thirties....I also use aloe vera..I drink it, and  also use it as a cleansing treatment on my skin.. I do not drink caffine products.....for those of you who are in your twenties..I would highly suggest to start caring for your skin asap! as for older ones out there....its never too late to care for your skin..aloe vera tones the skin...I had a friend who had badly damaged skin...some very serious wrinkles...I took some gaze soaking it in alum and placing it on her face like a mask .I then took some aloe vera juice placing it on top. of the gaze..she was to lay still for one hour..letting the aloe soak into her skin...when I removed the gaze I was shocked to see hardly any wrinkles.!!!.she was to do this once a week for 4 weeks then once every two weeks..then once a month...works wonderfully ! Most people are not aware that our features change as we grow older our bones shrink..our faces start showing hollow spaces where once was fat..seeing those wrinkles around the lips? once you are in that situation...I have seen fillers do wonders ( a needle injects fat around the lips filling in the area where the wrinkles are )..you can see results the same day it is done and lasts a few years... all I can really say to you folks out there is the earlier you start caring for yourself  the better the outcome!!!!

Thank you for sharing your experiences.  I had no idea that aloe vera would help with wrinkles.  I have used it when I got a burn.  Someone recommended that when I was on a diving trip.  I'll have to try ti for cleansing now.

If you have an Aloe Vera plant,  cut off a piece, open up the piece and rub the inside portion on your face area, eye area.

Allow to dry and you may feel the skin in that area tighten up.

Rub the excess on the hands and legs.

Might want to Google to find out some of the claims on aloe vera.

(I've also added the "gel" to smoothies many times as I've always had plants no matter where I reside. No problem to grow.)

I think the Olay products are absolutely wonderful. While I can't say that they make wrinkles disappear the products do tend to give the skin a wonderful smooth texture and more youthful look. These products are also less expensive than others on the market.

It does seem like a lot of skin products are grossly overpriced.

I've bought a lot of moisturizers for my face that haven't done a lot of good.  I asked my doctor about my dry face and he recommended getting vitamin E lotion.  He said that is what they use for their hands at work, as they dry out from washing them so often.  I bought a big tube and it works better than any of the moisturizers I've bought.

I used to use extremely high priced products and then read that the Olay regenerist line was the best on the market so I switched and my skin has never looked better. The appearance of fine lines is less and my skin looks very smooth and youthful. Their eye cream and lip cream are also excellent.

Nancy, I'm always interested in a well-recommended moisturizer - particularly for my hands. I'd like to try the Vitamin E lotion you've mentioned. What brand is it?  Is it fragrance-free?  Thank you so much!  Donna
