Now, there is a difference between how often you intend to backup and the actual backups done.

Same here, I intend to take a backup once a month, and it is borderline interval, but better than nothing. But reality makes the time lapse between backups come to practically no backups.

Be careful if you backup to external disks. It seems that external drives are more fragile than one would expect. I was using part of a second drive in its own partition. Unfortunately this is is only feasible for small backups. And since I hardly perform them, it is always a surprise when I find out that the External disk is no longer working.

I have just bought a 1TB Idisk, and so far, it works great.

Hi Carmen,

Myself I don't backup anything.  I'm not a business so nothing on my computer is really going to be missed.  All e-mail I have read and or replied to, so the old stuff really is not needed.  Web pages I have saved using OneNote 2003 could be missed.  But I could always build up these web pages again.  Messages posted in the CompuServe forums will last and be available as long as CompuServe is alive.

Hi Carmen,

I make an xcopy copy (meaning: just files copied, no backup software involved - and I do it from DOS) from time to time. That way, in case aof a reunstall, I can just put data back.

Kind regards

Hans

There are two kinds of backups I perform - full system backups and data backups.

I back up my data many times a day, doing so wirelessly over my network to a second computer.  For this I use "Beyond Compare" and synchronize the two My Documents folders.

I also do full system backups monthly by making HD images with Ghost 14.  I "save" three chronological backup sets.

Everyone, sorry not to have replied earlier, but I did not get the email notifications.

Scott, as to backups, sometimes it takes time to get settings back to what they were. I try to backup a few files and my email. I also take backups of my OSs, but not as often as I should.

I used to make backups from DOS, in fact I had up to yesterday a bat that would do all that and more. But since then I have changed many paths and partitions, making it hard to remember where is what. Also,  certain files did not take kindly to copy and paste. Also, this computer does not have a diskette drive, and I want to avoid the complication of adding one. I have a portable USB diskette drive, but again, I am waiting to see if I really want to start getting problems with the USB controller - a reason I replaced the previous computer.

The most I have ever backed up my computers has been twice a day in the early Windows installations. We take it for granted, but at around Windows 3 time, when Windows and applications were more often down than up. It was usual to hear that the computers were down, and to call later.
