I picked Middle Ages mostly because of the warrior elite in that society... especially in the times that warriors were sworn to uphold justice...

Even among the more urbane socialites skill with arms was a requirement for being a respected member of the group...

My second favorite period was the "Cowboy" era...  once again a time when warriors were expected to be on the side of their society's mores and rules...  and women could walk the streets of the "Wild West" in more safety than they could back east in the big cities...

We've lost a lot of things in becoming "civilized"

It hardly seems an improvement that rude jerks are walking the streets secure in their being untouchable despite manners and actions that would have gotten them dead in any other historical time...

Criminals have "Rights" today, and citizens aren't given any consideration unless they encounter the courts and "justice" system...

In my humble opinion, society needs to encourage moral and physical strengths, and produce "heros" who are unafraid to stand up for others, right wrongs and defend the weak...  Anything less and it's not a society worth living in, nor one in which decent individuals will ever feel "right" or "at home" in...

My admiration for those societies is based on the same premise that my strong support of the 2nd Amendment and developing person skill with weapons comes from... that the right to self-defense REQUIRES the ability to defend ones self effectively... especially in order to defend those weaker and deserving of protection.

I chose current because tomorrow it will be history, but that's my prejudice.  Archaeology would be my second choice, since we obviously haven't learned from it <G>

A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life wrote a blank check Made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.
