John,  My current favorite home decorating show is "Find & Design" on A&E weekend afternoons.  They get just about everything for redecorating a room by going to flea markets and yard sales.  It is amazing what they find and how cheap it is - and how nice it can look with a little work.

Hi Anne!

Haven't seen that show, but I can well imagine.... When I used to work downtown Los Angeles, my office was next door to a Goodwill Store and I would see them bringing in the big furniture items thru their back door and I would make a beeline at lunch to see what I could get.
I have a nice credenza for my upstairs office, custom made that could have cost almost $1000 to buy for $75 and a nice steel drawer cabinet that I use in the garage to store my sanding supplies for $25. Not to mention a nice "Mission" style table that we use in the kitchen.  Those are only the highlights, I have several more items that I picked up for cheap there.

Haven't bought much at garage sales lately. Did run into one estate sale about a year ago and missed picking up a nice sideboard by about 5 minutes!

John,  I've been visiting thrift shops and Goodwills this week since I almost have the dining room cleared out enough to actually use it to eat in.  But today I checked one of the little classified only newsletters online and found an ad for a table and chairs. Went to see it and though it is not antique, it is the style I wanted.

So for $400, I bought a dining room table that will extend to 9.5 feet with eight chairs - two armchairs and six straight one.  All are in excellent condition and the tapestry on the seats even goes with my decor!

Even better, the people are going away for two weeks so they don't mind if I don't pick up the table until they get back.  I will have that time to finish clearing the dining room, get the Karastan rug cleaned and in place and generally get ready to have a real dining room for the first time in years.

Oh yeah - the Karastans - my sister called me a while back.  She and her neighbors had a group yard sale a one of the neighbors forgot to pull out a couple of Karastan Oriental style rugs that they had inherited.  When my sister offered them to me, I jumped on them.  Matching rugs, one 10'4"x 12' and the other 9'x12'.  They are a little worn and desperately need cleaning.  But for $100, they are beautiful and complement the eclectic, slightly Queen Anne style we like.

Anne

That table sounds like a find!!! I had a similar situation, one morning I am watering the front yard and I see a neighbor up the street put a table and 6 chairs on the curb, so I sauntered over and asked him about it. He said that they had just brought home a new dining room set and did not need that one anymore and that he was going to call Goodwill or some such to come and get it.

I asked if he minded if I got it. He said no problem, have at it.   I backed up my Bronco loaded it and took it to my wife's mother's house where it now resides in the sunroom and has seen several summer parties.

These were old maple furniture, circa mid 50s and they are a nice golden maple color, sturdy and very confortable.

On the subject of finding furniture, we have a Hickory-White French Provencial China Cabinet, a table and 2 chairs. We only bought 2 at the time, as pre-1994 earthquake our house was rather small and there being only 2 of us.... besides the saleslady said that we could always order more in the same style and fabric pattern.... we expected to order at least 4 more and a sideboard.
To make a long story short, in 1996 the company discontinued the French Provincial style and now we could not order the rest of the chairs nor the sideboard. We've been looking ever since for 4 matching chairs and a sideboard.

John, You may have to settle for a similar style that compliments the pieces you already have.  That's the advantage of eclectic - nothing HAS to match, they can just look good together   ;-)

Well, fortunately we don't have a "formal" dining room....so yes, at least something in the same style and wood tone would be tolerable.  We don't loose hope  tho <g>

Hi Becca!!

Not really. Belive it or not, I don't check Ebay at all. My neighbor lives there, she buys and sells all the time but I still don't trust it. Photos can be deceiving <g>

Oh well, in some things I'm still somewhat of a luddite.

I just recently started playing around in there and have found some great deals on my obscure tastes in music ... like CD's for 1 cent + shipping   ;-)     I did go looking for things like small antique tables and such to replace some of the things I lost in the flood and it really WAS hit or miss but the interesting thing is that they change daily so at any given time something you've been looking for might show up .     Most of the furniture listed shipping as "you pick it up" but it seems like California was pretty heavily represented so you never know .    I was afraid of EBay for a long time but now I'm fearless ... after a few hard learned lessons ... like don't bid on a CD shipping from Malaysia  ;-)

Another reason I don't play around with Ebay is that my time's limited, between work and the Forums I hardly have time for anything else.

Maybe when I retire (again!!) I'll have the time <g>

It can be pretty overwhelming with all the various aspects ... I stick to one or two areas and am out in a couple of minutes .    Trolling has never been my favorite thing anyway ... probably because I didn't inherit the shopping gene .

A side board, also know as a buffet table is like a china cabinet without the top part, has drawers and doors below to store dishes and the top is used as a serving table when dishes are brought in from the kitchen before they are served at the main table.

Thank you. I was not familiar with that term (sideboard). Your description was as good as a picture.

Thanks again and kind regards,

Frank
