Actually I have 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2007 all installed on my machine (2007 within a virtual PC) and I use them all, depending on the client.
But 2002 is my default version.

Bill,

Shown below is my MSG 13516.3 reply to Betty Cat. Although my reference was primarily about Word my feeling about Office 2007 appears to be somewhat similar to yours.

***********************************************************************************************

Are you using Office 2007?  If so tell us what you link or don't like about it. If you are not using Office 2007 tell us why.

Betty,

I use Office XP (Office 2002) I do not use Office 2007.

I do not use 2007 because 2002 does everything I need and I don't feel a need or desire to purchase something that I do not need. Also. although I might be wrong,

I have heard that the standard Word file format is now DOCX which is somewhat different than the DOC format. I dfo not wish to confuse some of my inexperienced friends with with a new file format that would definitely confuse them. Iam not aware that any of my friends use Office 2007. With Office 2007, I have read that on my end I can SAVE As a DOC file and can do some magic to read an incoming DOC. To me, anything I or my friends have to do differently to read a Word document is unacceptable.

I do not update software just because it is there. For that reason and multiple other reasons I will avoid VISTA for as long as I can.

I'm reasoning here from my experience with Excel 2007, because I don't use Word 2007: "Compatibility Mode by default" may save you and your friends from doing anything different even after you have upgraded to Office 2007; the old DOC format will continue to be used when you save, if you are updating an old Word file that already has a DOC extension?

For example, when I opened one of my old Excel 2003 files in Excel 2007, "compatibility mode" showed before the file name on line one of the screen. Next, I made some changes to the file, and did Ctrl+s to save it; the file was saved with the old .xls extension rather than the available .xlsx extension. Smooth, huh?

There was one rough spot: I got a dialog box warning me (spuriously) that columns beyond 256 and rows beyond 65536 will not be saved. Microsoft should perhaps suppress that warning unless my file has such outliers.

I guess the conclusion is that you can upgrade now, but not use XML format until your friends gang up on you and tell you that you must.  In my case, I don't feel that this format-readyness is a waste of money, because I like some of the other features, especially the fact that Excel 2007 is better at diagnosing circular references (which I seem to produce often).

I don't suppose this argument will change your stand-pat attitude; nor should it, unless Word 2007 has some great new features.

Art,

Thank you for sharing your experiences with Office 2007 (Excel).
Your words shown above, at least at this time, is 100% accurate.

Thanks again,
.

Hi Betty,

I use Office 2007 and I'm very pleased with it. Of course, lots of users will be confused, but the enhancements in Powerpoint (Smart Art) and Excel (filtering) are very nice.

I use Office 2000 at work but 2003 at home. We're going to be upgraded to 2003 at work this Spring.

It was a learning curve, but I really like it.  When I first saw 2007, Beta 1, I was very confused and of course the help feature wasn't working.  But now that I have worked with it it is really easy to use.

Your computer sounds like the one I had at the law firm when I was doing support and developement.  I had 95, 97, 2000, 2002 on my work computer.  I now have 2003 and 2007 on my home computer.  I have 2003 on my laptop because I don't have enough disk space to install 2007.

Using XP (2002?) here at work.  My wife uses 2003 at home, but I find I don't use MS Office at home.

Betty, what happened to Office 2004 for Mac OS X? I use Office 2003 on XP on one computer at home. I use office 2002 at work. My favorite version of Office, which I use the most often, is Office 2004 on my Apple MacBook.

At the keyboard command level everything you learned on Windows (if you ever used Windows) works the same as soon as you substitute the Apple command key for control. At the menu and tool bar level Office for Mac is much better behaved than Windows. For one thing, you get back a lot of screen real estate because of Apple's single menu bar at the top of the screen, instead of every window having its own menu bar. The behavior of buttons (icons) is more rational. On the Mac Microsoft has done a better job than in earlier versions of Office on Windows of presenting you just the buttons you need based on the context of what you're doing.

Full disclosure: much of what I do is done on Linux, where I use OpenOffice.org 2.2. I've never had any problems exchanging documents, spreadsheets or presentations with Windows MS Office users.

I could do a survey to see how many people use PCs or Macs, and in this forum I could already tell you that the PC people would win <G>.  When I did the survey I want to see how many people had upgraded.  Since Mac Office 2008 will not be out until January I could not include it in the survey.

I probably shouldn't be here any more, as I use OpenOffice.org almost exclusively now. The only office component I have on this machine is Publisher (2003), and I could probably live without that if I had to. I simply got fed up with an expensive update cycle every few years. For the same reason, this comes to you via Linux and Firefox!

Best wishes,

Tim Bourne.

Doesn't bother me what products you use, this is not a microsoft  run forum.  It is a forum of people who use Microsoft office and like to help people.  I am the forum manager and I have used Firefox to access the forum!
