I access the forums using Mozilla Firefox via my ISP.
I had a CompuServe Classic account from 1979 to 2004 but had it put down when forum hosting was moved to Prospero.

I access via Mozilla Firefox and my ISP. My ID here is a classic CompuServe ID. I still have my original Classic CompuServe ID which proved invaluable for email when phone line bandwidth was nonexistent after Hurricane Katrina.

My classic account is still active... but I'm running out of excuses to keep paying the ten bucks a month...
I've been offered comped accounts ever since I became a SysOp... but always figured paying my own way made me a little more independent...
This account, btw, hasn't been updated to IMP access... do I get IMPinated for another incarnation???<G>
Once I get After Hours access on this one I'll be finished with the paid account... and moved over to this one completely...

Ted,
I can tell you only this: I use a CIS account for logging in here, but I still have my 1987 personal CIS account. Don't use it much as it's a spam magnet. But I was darned all glad to have it for the six weeks after we returned to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
DSL was down. (And I do think Bellsouth did a phenomenal job of having it back up within three months of the storm.)
Local CompuServe nodes were nonexistant.
My sponsored account was not permitted to log in via an 800 number.
But my old personal account could still use OzWin to at least grab email, so I wasn't completely bereft of connectivity. For that alone, it was worth what I've paid to keep it active.
But I do hope you won't be having a Hurricane Katrina where you are.

I think I've got 20 hours of dialup with that account... and I only changed it from unlimited about a year back...
Most of the hotels I've stayed in have had WiFi and I had my phone setup for 3G cellular data on the trip out here from NC...
My desktop was in the back seat, with a 17" LCD displaying Street Atlas USA and a GPS footprint of my current location and a wireless mouse and KB...
The cellphone was hanging from the passenger's visor hook and worked for about 2300 miles of the trip.
I lost data service coming down into the valley here... called Sprint and found out that they don't offer that here... after I had my computers and Palm all working wonderfully that way... we finally had to go DSL

Ted,
We didn't have a wifi machine until last Monday. Or a cell phone until four weeks after Katrina.
I rather like my DSL.

I
really
like my DSL. I won't willingly go back to dialup unless I have no choice. <g>

The classic account is a good just-in-case backup. I dropped another dialup provider I had last year because I simply wasn't using it any more, and the emailbox was clogged with spam. Now I've got this account, and my DSL account.
Marilyn gave you the keys to the IMPcastle for your TC_Hall account. Whether the IMPs IMPnitiate you again remains to be seen. <G>

Dri,
No, I wouldn't go back to dial up willingly. Post-Katrina I could have done without. But it did demonstrate something about Forum access -- that these days, it takes a heckuva lot more band width than it did for plain ASCII.

Another Firefox user here.
I can't remember what my classic compuserve ID was. I think I cancelled my paid membership shortly after they made the forae I was interested in available on the web. CIS was never that great an ISP for me.
I mourn the CIS glory days though, as this remains a privileged space on the net where you can have intelligent discussions. In fact, most of my internet friendships which have been going for over 10 years started in one CIS forum or another (Gamers, Trading cards, SF Lit, ...).

I remember reading about a survey someone gave, asking people what they thought about dihydrogen monoxide, listing what Ted's got in his text box. Yes, people agreed it was a dangerous substance and ought to be banned. They obviously didn't catch on to what dihydrogen monoxide is. <g>

Considering it's only the price of a few drinks or a couple of good cigars it's not all that big a problem.... especially when I'm not smoking or drinking all that much in my old age...<g>

>>Dihydrogen Monoxide!<<
I've already had it in several forms this morning...
As an infusion with finely ground organic reproductive materials in their heat denatured form and recycled with calcium products through organic animal processes...
Served at about 180 degrees Fahrenheit it was wonderful... Love that
Briel Cadiz
DHMO processor...
Flavored with some more plant reproductive materials it was a terrific adjunct to the denatured animal proteans that constituted the rest of my breakfast.
Pumped straight out of the ground, right here on the property and consumed straight up it's terrific here in the mountains of Montana...<g>
