The race for the White House may be over, but the competitive spirit of the campaigns lives on -- in the workplace, at least. In a survey by Robert Half International, almost half of senior executives said they believe employees are more competitive today than 10 years ago.

While it's true that a bit of healthy competition among staff members can increase motivation and productivity, too much tension can stand in the way of collaboration  -- and good team results.

Consider these five familiar workplace competitors and ways to deal with them when working together:

  • The Speeder - This colleague wants to win the race, at just about any cost. When your manager asks the team to submit ideas for a new project, for example, she's always the first to respond.
  • The Loner - This person is highly secretive and guards his ideas like they're the crown jewels.
  • The Superstar - No challenge is too great for this employee, who lobbies to take on the highest-profile projects.
  • The Weightlifter - This individual always offers to take on an extra project in order to look good to his manager.
  • The Saboteur - This person will do anything to get ahead, like taking all the credit for a joint project.

I've worked with all of these types, and the one I hate the most is the saboteur. Which types have you worked with?

I hated the "Superstar" the most. I alway found their self-projection nauseating and I lost respect for those in power who fell for their grandiosity. I always found that they talked the talk but when it came to walking the walk, they left that to others and took the credit.

I worked for 8 years under a plant super who took the credit every chance he got. He would outright lie about an good idea somebody else would have who worked beneath him and claim it was his own idea to his boss. Three other people including myself came up with a better idea one time to make the shipping dept run a little smoother . We made the mistake of following protocol and went to him with our suggestion. The day he came to the shipping dept with his boss in tow it was very clear to us he had taken the credit for the idea. He glared at us as if to say  don't you say anything!!  We stopped going to him after that and went directly over his head.He was an insecure jerk who did other underhanded things as well, but that's another story.1

I'm revolted by the one who had her boss's illegitimate baby, so therefore any act of negligent retention she performs is fine like tapping another employee's home phone and then her little feelings get hurt when she listens in or taking files and hiding them.

You forgot one more. I call him/her the taddler. A person who gets a little authority and goes back and tells on somebody when a little something goes wrong or you do something of inconsequence that no one would know happened if they didn't tell. As far as I'm concerned a person like that could fry for all I care.

I assume he was short on self esteem. Because he must have figured he couldnt earn any glory on his own, he had to steal it from others.

The "Taddler" with a "little authority" -- I think it's a "little" something else - LOL Obviously "taddling" is their only way of getting attention and a substantial amount of the time they are making it up or turning nothing into something to get "attention".

I worked at a company about ten years ago. One of the shipping dept clerks was promoted to shift supervisor, and I had the misfortune of being on his shift. After his promotion, he became a real hardass, even though he used to nap on the job in his clerks office.

I received emp of the month once, and he wrote me up for doing exactly what was listed on my award.

I had a minor injury to my hand, which I reported to him a couple of hours later. (we were trying to finish a large order to be shipped that night) He wrote me up for not reporting it immediately.

I also remember more than one Marine that, after promotion, became that same way. I saw several good Marines brought up on charges for things that they used to do with the Corporal or Sergeant that charged them!!

Power sometime goes to a person's head.

I worked briefly one year for a department store . I got sick with a bad case of the flu that year and the doctor gave me a note for my employer that I would be off work for three days. I decided after two days I was well enough to return to work and I walked in work and gave my boss the note. She read the note and said  ' well I cant allow you to return tonight because the doctor says three days and not two and so since you can not work tonight I'm going to report you as a No call no show!  That meant she was reporting me to her boss that I didn't call in work and say I couldn't be there or show up for work that night. The only thing that mattered to her was that I couldn't be at work that night even though she was the one insisting on it. I went over her head to her boss and asked if this was fair since I Was there that night for work. She said she never got a report from her like that and no I wasn't in any trouble for a no call no show.
