It's no secret that having a celebrity endorse or advertise your product is good for business. But these are just plain weird!

  • Pope Leo XIII and Mariani Wine (laced with cocaine)
  • Ozzy Osbourne and I Can't Believe It's Not Butter
  • Gorbachev and Louis Vuitton
  • Mr T and Flavor Wave Oven Turbo
  • Joe Namath and Beautymist Pantyhose
  • The Olsen Twins and Got Milk?
  • OJ Simpson and Hertz
  • Ben Stiller and Chu Hi
  • Paris Hilton and tipsy elephant cause
  • Kiss and Kiss Kasket

I think part of the problem is that celebrities are paid big bucks for endorsements. Sadder still is the fact that so many of us will buy products ONLY because a star says we should.

Have you ever bought a celebrity endorsed product for that reason? Were you happy with it in the long run?

Hi Teri! Not that I can remember. Wondering, tho, how many men/women bought Michael Jordan's "briefs or boxers?" :-)

I have never brought something because a celebrity endorsed it.

  • Ozzy Osbourne and I Can't Believe It's Not Butter
  • The Olsen Twins and Got Milk?
  • OJ Simpson and Hertz

  • Why are these weird? I assume Ozzy has to watch what he eats just like the rest of us old folks. The Olsen twins probably do drink milk. OJ was promoting Hertz way before he got into trouble with the law.

  • Joe Namath and Beautymist Pantyhose

  • This one was weird but that was the way Broadway Joe acted in those days. I think this was when folks started saying that celebrities should only be endorsing products that they actually use.

I probably have been swayed a bit by a celebrity I liked, without actually realizing it.  If you're interested, it's easy to move over a few notches toward the positive side when someone you like endorses the product.  I have never bought a product I wasn't initially interested in just because a celebrity said I should.

Quite a few years ago in the UK a recently retired and very well known senior policeman started to advertise a new kind of tyre as "A major contribution to road safety".  The public referred to it as "A major contribution to his new kitchen" ;)

I always wonder about the celebs who advertise charities, begging us to give our money to the charity.  They should tell us whether they get paid for these ads, whether the do them for free, or whether they themselves contribute, I think.

Actually, over here we are starting to pay more attention to just that.

    http://money.cnn.com/2009/10/06/news/companies/ftc_blogger_advertising_rules/index.htm

As that article points out, many bloggers are often either given a free product by an advertiser and then asked to post a review, or they are outright paid to review it. But we as consumers don't know that. I would think that most celebrities are paid to endorse products. That's just how they make some of their income, especially the ones who's acting career might have died down a bit.

That's an excellent step in the right direction.  Personally I don't have a problem with an actor appearing in an ad.  I feel a ramble coming on about my trip to Iceland in the late 1980s and found the plane full of the sexiest girls you can imagine, immaculately made-up and coiffured, split jeans (was the fashion then) and manicured.... so many of them I was squished-up, with them on all sides, in Business Class... but I will desist....for now... but I'm sure you can imagine how I felt?  They were all on their way to Iceland to make an ad for McEwan's Lager (it turned out to be a classic and they blew up a glacier in the making but I did promise to desist, for now).

You need film directors, producers, actors, actresses, cameramen, lighting and sound experts and all the rest to make a modern ad.  A lot goes into them and people have to be paid.  A single showing costs £50,000 at peak time, we are talking about big business.

The borderline ones, for me are those stars who have a public persona of honesty and appear to be urging folk to take out insurance, sell houses, pay for their burials tomorrow, and so on.

But even then, we know they get paid - they are actors and they are paid to act.

It's the charity ones that trouble me.  "The situation in Blarsiland is perilous, people dying like flies, more death and doom to come, hurry down to your bank and pay money to the Blarsiland Relief Fund".  In those cases, where the message is charitable and not commercial, surely we need to know whether the message is genuinely from that person as an individual - i.e. they have also donated and giving their time for free - or whether they are just acting?

Yea, I know what you mean. We have several old timer actors here that have commercials for just those types of things, and since thier acting roles were usually those of honest men, I think many tend to trust them.  We also have several attractive movie actresses that hawk their own line of make-up and beauty products. I'm willing to bet that they sell because there are actually women that believe they will look that good if they use them.

I have never bought a product because of celebrity endorsement.   I may use a product that a celebrity endorsed but not because THEY did a commercial.  I can't see how they can be the expert, just like when they spout off about politics...  ummm ok  I will be good and not go there <LOL>

Some of these actresses endorsing hair color, I doubt very much they would not put color on their own hair but only done by a professional.

I loved all her pictures, but I greatly admired her for breaking the myth that the entertainment and fashion businesses have been selling our young girls about what is "normal."  When she appeared on the cover of (whatever magazine it was) in bra and panties, and showed her imperfect body, she showed both courage and concern for the next generation.

    Dot,

This is not just about Jamie Lee Curtis - I did like her parents (G).  It is about Hollywood taking on views.  They are movie starts and probably not experts in their given opinions.  The have the right to express opinions but their star status shouldnt be the reason why we listen to them.

Right.  Remember Robert Young, who played a doctor on TV for so many years that OTC drug companies hired him to tout their products?
