Sometimes making a good living requires working with blood, guts, dark spaces, or creepy-crawlers. Are you up for a little fright? The following jobs each include something a little unsettling or, in many cases, down right scary. Take a look and see if you're brave enough to make a creepy career move.

  • Funeral Director - Median Salary: $46,000
  • Pest Control Worker - Median Salary: $35,600
  • Phlebotomist - Median Salary: $27,400
  • Archaeologist - Median Salary: $47,200
  • Theatrical Makeup Artist - Median Salary: $44,300
  • Night Security Guard - Median Salary: $28,700
  • Sewer Pipe Cleaner - Median Salary: $35,900
  • Slaughterer or Meat Packer - Median Salary: $25,300
  • Coal Mine Worker - Median Salary: $59,300
  • Embalmer - Median Salary: $45,000

Some of these jobs might be considered unpleasant, but I'm not sure they are creepy. Well, maybe sewer pipe cleaner is, lol.

Are there any that you would be totally unwilling to do?

I think sewer pipe cleaner must be the worst.  In the huge city sewers, it's sometimes necessary for people to don their hip boots and walk through the sewers, inspecting and looking for problems.  NO THANKS!

I've done plenty of phlebotomy during my working life.  There's nothing to it.

Do you get the British TV comedy series called 'Doc Martin', over there?  Doc Martin is a top flight (as in at the very top) cardiac surgeon who becomes haemophobic and has to give up surgery.  He takes a job as a GP in a very small Cornish village.  Doc Martin (Martin Clunes) has a very unusual bedside manner!  Some of the funniest TV I have ever seen in my life and the latest series (season 5, I think) is the best of the lot which is unusual - normally they are flagging after season 2.  Well worth ordering on DVD if you can't get it on the telly.  If you imagine the fun and games with a haemophobic doctor with a personality disorder, you are on the right lines.  Martin Clunes also starred in another British TV series playing the part of the owner and manager of a small undertaking firm he had inherited from his father.

I used to know a bowel surgeon and asked him about the smell - he said you soon get used to it.  A dentist told me much the same.  I looked into our aversions for particular smells a few years ago and apparently it is our defence mechanism for avoiding these things in our food (or so the theory goes, nobody could possibly know what God or Mr Darwin had in mind).  Apparently you can quite easily re-train your response to these smells and actually find them pleasant!

For a start, how about the smell of humans?  You know what it's like going into the monkey house at the zoo; a real smell.  I suppose that we keep ourselves cleaner than monkeys do (but they spend a lot of their time grooming) but I'd guess that if you could breath nothing but charcoal-filtered air for a month and take it off you would find the stench in the high street overpowering.  I think you'd need a full-face mask, charcoal filter, and some kind of feeding pipe that you could use to draw broth and water up.  I wonder if anyone has tried something like that?  I've had a quick google and cannot find anything on the dulling of sense of smell where the smell is constant but years ago I had to install some instrumentation in a brewery and the first day or so were pretty unpleasant. After that I increasingly didn't notice it and what I could notice was not unpleasant.  Spanish supermarkets approaching Christmas carry hundreds of legs of serrano ham (like Parma ham) and the smell is pretty horrible.  Puts you off buying any food there.  Same with Spanish butchers.

Ohhh I love Doc Martin, excellent series and demonstrates what a versatile actor Martin Clunes is.

Back to the subject, I would have absolutely no problem being a funeral director (least there will be no hassle from your customers). Or even a phlebotomist (I initially left out the 'H' there and changed this into a whole other thread LOL) but forget about the pest control! I just don't DO creepy snakey crawly things.

I assume Doc Martin is a BBC production.  We get those years later.  At present, I'm not buying DVDs or anything else I can do without.  Having 2/3 of the household income suddenly disappear has put me on notice that I have to pinch pennies.

I think we can adjust to almost any odors, but two that I simply can't stand are smokers and underarm BO.  I have one good European friend who doesn't use underarm deodorant, and it's simply agony to greet him and his wive, and give them a hug.  I've also met them when they were all done up for a big dinner occasion, and they were fresh as daisies.  They were perfect examples of the "common knowledge" that Europeans don't worry about underarm odor.

I certainly hope so!  Incidentally, you'll notice the quotes around "common knowledge."  Like so much "common knowledge," there's a highly questionable basis of fact.

I got in an online discussion with my friend one time, and he said Americans scrub off natural skin oils, then replace them with artificial skin lubricants.  I don't think he got it that when we scrub off the natural oils, we also scrub off dead cells that bacteria can wreak havoc with.  Incidentally, he was continental European, not British Isles.

Incidentally, another European friend, in the NL, worked for Unilever and used just about ever cleaning product they made, for both home and body.  No BO on him!

LOL! :) :) We shower once or even twice a day here in the Med and we use anti-perspirant (it's the perspiration that causes the cosy home for the bacteria) and eau de toilette.  I don't think that we are unusual.  However there are quite a few country folk who are not quite so ?fastidious?  I'll come and give you a hug and you can smell for yourself :)

No, Doc Martin is an Independent production.  You'd be able to get it for sure either via Amazon.com or .co.uk but I understand when you say that this is not the right time to be spending on frivolous things like DVDs.  2/3 is a huge reduction,  can you manage that?

And what will Mrs. LD say about that? <g>

2/3 is a huge reduction,  can you manage that?

A little of that will be restored, when the government gets through with its slow processing.  I get survivor benefits from Dale's USMC retirement (55%), but I don't think I get anything from is disability pay from the Agent Orange program, and I know I don't get any of his SS benefits.  Civil Service retirees can choose the greater of either their own CSRS benefits or their deceased spouse's SS.  My CSRS is a little higher than his SS.

My brother has assured me he will see that my mother's estate covers me until I can get things worked out, but when all the dust settles, I will be adjusting to a different standard of living.  Incidentally, my brother (age 82) is having an aortic valve replacement tomorrow in NH.  That's a really major procedure that requires sawing the sternum in two and spreading the chest rather wide.  I'm on pins and needles until I hear that he's safely out of the hospital.  I've learned the hard way that just "out of surgery" isn't enough.  His two sons will take turns staying with him.

You're really having a bad time of it, Dot.

I'm managing better today -- at least, emotionally.  The neighbors from both sides have been over to offer help.  One (the retired Marine) is putting a door knob on our store room door that has been knobless for some time, after we had to cannibalize it to replace the carport door when it failed.  His wive brought me a delicious dinner.  I had a pot of soup on, but it didn't look like the veggies were going to be done in time for dinner.  (It's a BIG pot of soup.)  I'll put it up in serving sized plastic containers and freeze most of it.

And poor Dale got caught up in Agent Orange?  Rotten luck.

In our VA system, prostate cancer and Type 2 diabetes are presumptive evidence of Agent Orange damage if the soldier/sailor/marine was in Vietnam during the years Agent Orange was used.  Dale had both.

No governments provide enough for those brave enough to fight their wars - but always was so.

That's so.  For years, we've had Marine Corps Retired tags on our cars, and every once in a while someone would come up to thank Dale and shake his hand in appreciation for his contribution to our country.  That always made him feel SO good, because when the Vietnam war was going on, the returning military were scorned and even sometimes spit upon.  That never happened to him, but it did to many.

I didn't know that.  I have Type 2  and spent a year in RVN.  Prostate is so far, good.

People who hated the war, misplaced that hate towards the soldier when it should have been towards the politician, as they sent them.  I'm not sure what turned people positive on the military and started thanking us for our service, but I am glad it did.  Lowe's gives 10% off to any veteran.  I'm getting a free car wash on Nov 11th (that happens to be the exact date I landed in RVN).  Free food at Fur's on Nov 30.

It is common for women on mainland Europe to not shave. (Certainly doesn't mean they're smelly, it's just their custom.)

    UK'ers do shave though.

I have Type 2  and spent a year in RVN.

Go to your VA Agent Orange clinic ASAP!  That's a 10% disability.  If/when your Type 2 gets worse, then appeal.  Dale had stage 3 renal failure, and I kept dragging my feet about writing it up for appeal.  See what procrastination does?

You've always kept in good physical condition, haven't you?  Most adult Type 2s (not all of them, of course) have obesity as a factor in developing insulin resistance.

Go to the Diabetes Forum, and you'll learn more than you ever thought there was to learn!  Paula has written a six-part intro to Diabetes that is well worth reading.

Lowe's gives 10% off to any veteran.

I didn't know that!  I assume I can get the same 10% with my military dependent card.  I'm due for renewal of my card in 2010, so I guess I'll go it alone and find out what happens.  I can be prepared by taking a death certificate and his card.

The rules keep changing.  I'd call the nearest office now!  Find out what you need.  I believe they are making ID indef now.  Did you contact the casualty assistance office to find out what could be done.

No, I didn't know there was such an office.  As for the ID card, I might get the retired Marine next door to help me with that.  I see that my card expires in March 16, 2010.  Jim next door said I should call on him any time of the day or night that he could help.  As he said, that's what Marines do for their brothers and their families.  He has already replaced the storage room door knob and lit the water heater when the pilot light went out.  His wife Jennifer has brought over supper twice.  They're very nice neighbors to have.

A few years ago, I had a part time job doing body removals for a funeral service. This company had the contract with the county to do coroner removals as well. It was interesting work, quite grusome at times, but didn't pay that great.
