Red wine, white carpet: Uh oh!

Today's lesson could be given in a quick 100 words or so, simply quoting a hurried text exchange with a friend who had a problem at a family Christmas party:

Q: How do you get red wine out of a light colored rug?

A: White wine! Pour white wine on it, then pat it up gently with paper towels.

When holiday parties abound, happy crowds sharing fun, fellowship and frivolity are bound to yield the occasional accidental wine spill. Red wine can leave serious stains, so this seasonal tip sheet may come in handy.

White wine works because its neutral color and alcohol help dilute and dissolve the red-wine spill. Pour it on - you don't have to use Le Montrachet: Jug wine or something you've got left over in the fridge will work fine.

Once you've poured on enough white wine to turn the red stain pale pink, pat the spot as dry as you can with a big wad of paper towels or a bath towel. Don't rub, which will spread the stain around or force the red color deeper into the carpet.

It's not a bad idea to follow up with a commercial carpet cleaner or stain remover to wipe out the last vestiges, but white wine's the key, and get it on fast.

If you're stuck without any white wine, try club soda. Some say the carbonation helps scrub out the red-wine color as it dilutes the stain. But really, what wine enthusiast isn't going to have a little extra white around?

If you've tried this technique or have other red-wine stain antidotes you'd like to share, please tell us about it!

My grand daughter spilled her whole glass of water on my white and green rug on Christmas! I offered up thanks to all the Gods that be that it wasn't red wine! (G) I never knew that about white wine. Would it work also on table cloths?

This wasn't wine, but the effect was similar.  We spilled cranberry juice cocktail liberally on my mother's newly-installed pale beige carpet in her assisted living apartment some years ago.  The only thing we had to attack it with was Glass Plus and paper towels.  When we were through, you had to know the spot was there and look closely in order to find it.  For all practical purposes, it was gone.  I was afraid the blue color in the Glass Plus would be a problem, but it wasn't.

I honestly am not sure what you are trying to say! I would NEVER NEVER purposely put soy sauce on a white rug! or are you saying how to remove it?

Club soda works great as well.  I've never heard the white wine trick, though.  And obviously I didn't ready completely through before responding.

When my son was a baby we found that Glass Plus, as well as Fantastic(sp) worked well to remove stains from carpet, clothes(his and mine), etc.  I think we ran around smelling like one or the other for about a year.  Another great find was Spot Shot.  I think it is intended to clean spots out of carpets/rugs, but we used it to get stains (especially greasy ones) out of everything.

I don't think I've ever heard of that one.  I should look for it, as I'm constantly having problems getting the last traces of grease out of food stains on my knit tops.  I wish it wouldn't look funny for adults to wear bibs in public! <g>

Robin,

The white wine does work...hate to see wine wasted like that ...but you do what you have to do, unless you have and do this...:::

First you must blot the wine with an absorbent cloth...then you spray click on this Oxyclean let it foam up and blot again it's like a miracle ...we have cream carpet in the bedroom ...big mistake since I drink red wine 99.9% of the time...the wife is an expert, trust me Oxyclean has kept me out of the dog-house many a night...Cheers !!!

Salute, Per cent'anni!

John

Nice to know about Oxyclean also! I love that stuff but didnt realize you could use it for wine stains. I only have the powder on hand as I use it for the laundry- I should get a spray container as well

John, in my experience one has to be careful with those powerful cleaners, they can wind up bleaching carpet so the former spot is lighter than the surrounding carpet.

Dilute the powdered Oxyclean with water (instructions on the package), put it in a spray bottle. I don't think they make a liquid, but of course, I could be wrong. We just had the carpets cleaned. They recommended a stain repellent be put into the cleaning solution. Less than a week later, 1/2 a glass of red wine got spilled. We just sponged it up with a wet cloth, you can't even tell where the spill was.

They make an Oxyclean for washing clothes, and I believe, also one for carpets. The Oxyclean for clothes is really great at getting about 95% of stains, but there are some it just doesn't touch.

I hope we can find the Spot Shot.

HERE is more info about it.  Maybe it will lead us to a retail source.  It's a product of the WD-40 company.
