'Iron Chef America' at the White House?

The White House evidently contacted Food Network to discuss filming Iron Chef in their kitchen. Do you think this will be positive, negative, or will it make no difference at all in how healthy Americans will eat after viewing the show?

Michelle Obama will make a cameo appearance on an episode of "Iron Chef America" filmed at the White House, the Food Network announced Wednesday.

The first lady introduces the secret ingredient for the challenge, which pits White House Chef Cristeta Comerford and Iron Chef Bobby Flay against Iron Chef Mario Batali and Emeril Lagasse.

The White House approached the Food Network about filming "Iron Chef America" at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. as a way to reach those people who haven't heard yet about the first lady's efforts to curb childhood obesity through healthy eating and exercise, the New York Times reports.

Obama reveals that the secret ingredient for the challenge is anything grown in the White House garden, the Food Network said. The chefs harvest ingredients from the 1,100-square-foot garden before facing off in Kitchen Stadium.

The episode, which airs on Jan. 3 at 8 p.m. on the Food Network, features Jane Seymour, Nigella Lawson and Olympic swimmer Natalie Coughlin as judges.

I'm not a regular watcher of Iron Chef. DH can't stand the noise of the clashing swords at every scene cut. From what I have seen, they're going to have to clean up their act considerably to be considered healthy eating. At times they use as much butter as Paula Deen!

I've never seen the show and probably won't watch this one either, but at Aspen last June, Bobby Flay had to cancel his classes except for the last one on Sat. afternoon (which I had signed up for) because he was invited to grill burgers or steak with the President at the White House. His description of telling the President not to peak, not to do anything was hilarious!

Just more Obama political garbage to promote his agenda.........  I honestly like the show, but as soon as these shows start getting political.... it destroys the integrity and purpose of the show. Shame on the Food Network for jumping on the Obamania bandwagon.

Oh, for heavens sake! This is a cooking forum. We share recipes and talk about cooking shows. Please keep your politics out of our forum. Go to the Political Debate forum if you want to rip apart some show that the President's wife just happens to make an appearance in. We don't want to hear it.

I normally don't watch Iron Chef. I can't say that I have ever enjoyed one of the ones that I have watched. I certainly won't watch this one.

I'll eagerly skip it too. It's not a show I enjoy. It's like gladiators using food instead of lions, or some such analogy. If I wanted my cooking to be that frenetic, I'd...well, I'd cook. I'm so disorganized it IS that frenetic!

I'd love to be able to watch it if only to see the White House kitchen. <G>

I wonder if the BBC might do something similar with Jamie Oliver as the chef at Buck House in Westminster?

There is a kitchen in the main part which is used for state dinners, etc. There is a private kitchen for the occupants, and there is one I believe in the west wing for the workers. I may be wrong about the third one, faulty memory at work here.
