The Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they miss someone very special to them; who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright eyes are intent; the eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to break away from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. YOU have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.......

I have a copy that I have on my fridge and I think it is so beautiful. I can't wait to see my shihtzu Stripe, my yelloe lab Kit, my 2 beagles, and many other dogs in between. I love them all. Now I have my Taz and he is the cutest Maltese in the world but that is another subject!

I don't think I could handle reading/seeing it every day. While I can take great comfort from it when I need it the most, if I read it at other times, it tends to bring out the tears - too many memories sometimes. It can be overwhelming for me.

Everyone feels different about things like this. I understand what you mean but I also have a beautiful prayer about St. Francis ( patron saint of animals) so I am ok with it. That is also my patron st.Just the thought of ever having to loose Taz is unbearable. We are all in this together about our love al friends. Have a good one.

Mutts are supposed to be calmer than petagree dogs and also they are alot cheaper they are very sweet . I myself have a cocker-lab mix named Cookie Megan. Most mutts are called mongerels and supposedly not worth anything but actually they can turn out to be the best dogs ever .

I'm with you. I enjoyed reading it & think it will make other people feel better. But it also makes me cry. I miss my babies so much that I can feel it inside my body. I know they will be there waiting for me. But I still have to get through the next however may years without them. I can't say they are not here. Sometimes I feel one of them walking around in the bed during the night. I think it is Sam. It actually happened to my husband for the first time this morning too. I had gotten up & gone to work & it woke him up. I told him I think it is how Sam has found to communicate with us. Sometimes I hear a single bark & it wakes me up too. It isn't the same as holding them, kissing them & just smelling them. Yet somehow it makes a lot of difference to know they are choosing to be with you when they could be anywhere else.

Hi there, and welcome to DLC!

I don't particularly care whether a dog is purebred or a mixed breed. I love them all.  People might pay more money for purebred dogs, but the love your dog gives you is priceless, no matter the dollar amount your dog cost you initially.   Most dog lovers love their animals unconditionally - no matter what their genetic makeup is. -merzi

Plenty of us get that feeling of them being 'close' at some time or another after they go to the Bridge.  And who is to say it is not true, eh?  Not me, that's for sure. -m

I still have occasional dreams about one of our dogs who went to the Rainbow Bridge over 20 years ago.  It's always the same.  I open the garage door of the house we had when we lived in NJ and see Snoopy in the dog pen alive.  I'm always confused, because I thought he was dead and I wonder how he survived in the dog pen for years without food and water.  Then I wake up.  My husband thinks it's weird that I still dream about Snoopy.  Heck, I dreamt about cutting calculus class for 40 years after I took it!

Heck, I dreamt about cutting calculus class for 40 years after I took it!

I'd still be having nightmares if I tried to take it! I'm a geometry worldview type.

I still dream of Shep, my childhood companion from 2 until I was 9. His heirs have their place in them as well.

Adiós . . .

My daughter had to have her 15 year old Chihuahua put to sleep this morning. She had spent most of Sat.- Tues. in and out of vets. He was convulsing and having heart failure. She saved him from the pound and they were never separated. She and the grandaughters called on the way home from the vets last night. She had gotten the news that it was hopeless. She held him in her arms at 10:00 a.m. this morning with all the family present and talked in his ear until he reached THE BRIDGE. I will never forget those retching sobs and wales I heard as my 14 yr. old grandaughter was on the phone. Oh how we love them and they always seem to leave much too soon. (Even at 15!) Thanks for listening ....I'm crying again.

I am so sorry.  We all know our dogs will leave sooner or later, but that knowledge doesn't make it easier.  It must be especially hard for your granddaughter who grew up with her.

Sunlight streams thru window pane unto a spot on the

floor.....Then I remember it's where you used to lie
but now you are no more.
Our feet walk down a hall of carpet, and muted echoes sound.
Then I remember It's where your paws would joyously abound.
A voice is heard along the road, and up beyond the hills,
Then I remember it can't be yours....Your voice is still.
But I'll take that vacant spot of floor and empty muted hall
And lay them with the absent voice and unused dish along the wall.

I'll wrap these treasured memorials in a blanket of my love,
And keep them for my best friend, until we meet upove.

The thought of the rainbow bridge has been a big help this weekend.I lost my Father on Friday night and I know that his 2 scotties and his pointer that he had as a child were all at the Rainbow Bridge to meet him.

You have my sincere condolences on your Fathers death. Funny, you mentioning Scotties. I have 2 right now and have owned them all my life. The poem I listed is by an unknown author. I thought it very lovely. Glad you enjoyed it.

You can be sure as their is a God apove that they will be waiting for him and he will be at peace and overjoyed at seeing his beloved companions again.

Sincerely, Pepper
