Most software Manufacturers advise to turn off the AntiVirus Program you are running along with any Firewalls before installing their program. This applies as well to the major installation of your CompuServe2000 internet program. This includes a Reinstallation of the program.

Do a fresh restart of your machine and at least look toward your clock area at the taskbar at the bottom right. "Right" click your Norton, McAfee or other AntiVirus program and either Exit>Shutdown or Disable it . Any other programs you see, except for your Sound with picture of a speaker and your clock, do the same. Now download or install the CompuServe2000 program. Once you restart your computer, those programs will return but it's absolutely important that you turn off your AntiVirus Program. Once your CompuServe program is downloaded/installed and you have to restart your machine, your programs will return. If not, double click it from your Desktop Shortcut Icon or from your Start Menu. It's crucial that you turn off your AntiVirus Program when downloading/installing the CompuServe2000 program. It has a problem wading thru the AV program and you will develop problems.

As an example, I've been with CompuServe2000 since it's creation and by far, CompuServe Version 6.0. and 6.0.2 for Windows XP have been the most reliable of programs. Load it properly and you shouldn't have problems(hopefully).

Hi Kert,

Perhaps you could help with merging Compuserve Personal Filing Cabinets.  I can't get ANYONE at the Compuserve Help desk to understand (English).  Here's the situation.

My old PC has Compuserve R5.x on it.  I upgraded from Compuserve Classic and ran the program to convert all the old address book (300+ entries) and >50 folders.  It ran fine.  No problem.  The file is 18MB and contains everything.

New PC runs Compuserve 6.0.2 and is independent of the old PC.  I want to MERGE the filing cabinets.   The new HD is large enough to hold a copy of the old PC's HD.  One of the people at the so called Help Desk said I'd have to manually copy the 300+ entries from the old to the new address book!  Wrong answer.  I have >15 address entries and 30+ docs on the new PC and just want to merge them.  Is this rocket science?  Is there a procedure already written down?  I can't be the first CS user to need this assistance.

Thanks for your help.

Bob

Let me review what should have happened.  You upgraded from your classic, you installed the CompuServe2000 Version 5.0 program.  Then used the Keyword:   NEWCOMPUSERVE on the 5.0 program and transferred your addressbook and files.

Then, you upgrade to a good program for your machine.  Normally, Version 6.0 for Windows 95,98,98se,me or win2k or Version 6.0.2 for Windows XP.  Your files should have transferred.

What in this sequence did I miss here?  Trying to upgrade from Classic to CS2000 is a nightmare/mess.

Not to mention that is isn't really an "upgrade."  At least, not to me.

Kert,

The sequence you mentioned isn't completely accurate.

The conversion to CS 5.x on the old machine was independent of the installation of CS6.0.2 on the new machine.  I have two different versions running on two separate machine.  I only wanted 5.x long enough to make the conversion but the Help Desk(?) couldn't provide help fast enough.  I bought the new machine because I needed it.  I want to trash the old machine as soon as I can convert/copy/merge/migrate the old address book and filing cabinets.

I hope this helps.

Bob

Bob, the sequence I mentioned is the only way to transfer from Classic to CompuServe2000.  If you went directly from your Classic to Version 6.0, 6.0.2 or 7.0, you don't get the files.  The tool isn't there.  Why in the world CompuServe/ AOL hasn't fixed this is beyond me.  Buuuut, my last contact with TechSpt had no fix for this.  You had to load the ancient CompuServe2000 Version 5.0 first, transfer your files and then upgrade to the newer versions of 6.0, 6.0.2 or 7.0.

One thing though, if you did anything with the Organize folder in an attempt to transfer files between the old Version 5.0 and anything newer, you probably didn't get anything.   The Organize folder is completely different between those versions.  Are we getting close here?

Kert,

Yes, I think we're getting close.  I just can't believe CS would either be so dumb or incompetent in engineering software upgrades.

I DID get a lot of help from "NuttyOne" in the livehelp chat room yesterday.  She actually understood the situation.  There maybe a partial solution to this upgrade problem.  I won't have the time to actually try it until the weekend.  I'll post the update if I can find it.

Thanks for your help.

Let me know what Nutty One had to say but it should be the same information as I provided.  I know about filing cabinets concerning the different programs and the Organize folder.

Kert,

I found the email "NuttyOne" sent me yesterday.  You'll probably understand it immediately.  I won't have the time to run thru it until the weekend.

Thanks for continuing the thread.

These tips should help you carry over any files from version 5 to version 6
which you may wish to keep.
Run your 5.0 version, then open the Favs window (Favorites menu -
Favorites) then Save/Replace - Save the Favs. Note the folder you save in!
Repeat if needed for any extra member names you wish to transfer.
Next close all copies of CS2000. In the 5.0's organize folder COPY the
membername file(s) (NO extension) to the 6.0 build's download folder. Then
rename the _copied_ files in download to screenname.pfc (make certain
Explorer's view - options or folder view is set to SHOW ALL extensions
before you start).
Start 6.0. Note the current screen name. Open its Favorites menu -
Favorites. Save/Replace - Replace using the "save" file from above. Close
Favs.
Select File menu - open. Navigate to its download folder if it isn't the
default. Open the .pfc file corresponding to the screen name in use. Then
open your Personal File Cabinet. You may drag e-mail, etc from the opened
file to your PFC. Don't drag your address book or Favs since the AB is on
the server and you did the Favs already!
When done close all the windows. Change screen names on the connect window
if needed and repeat.
NOTE: no good means exists to copy the Address Book into 6.0 except
upgrading an existing build. Copying Favs and saved messages works as
described.
Reinstalling as an upgrade of a "good" copy is another option assuming
sufficient disk space. In this case you should be certain of which folders
contain which builds so you "upgrades" the correct one!
After you are satisfied that the reinstalled copy is OK you may use the
uninstaller (Control Panel - Add/Remove - CompuServe) to remove extra
copies only. Again you need to be certain which copy is in which folder so
you chooses those to remove correctly.

What I would like to know is why Compuserve sucks as bad as it does.  Why can't ANYTHING be simple and just WORK?  As best I can tell, there hasn't been a software update in 3 years, and they are advising people in this forum NOT to use that ancient update, but to use version 6!!!

WHY?  Just make it work!

You're venting on paying members like yourself.  No one in here works for CompuServe--the helpers volunteer their time and personal machines to help other members.

Contact CompuServe direct on this.  I don't know either why they haven't done anything  in the last several years.  The only major thing they have done that I can see is fix the broken calendar feature(which still isn't right) and outsource tech support to India.

HELP!!! I have Compuserve 7.0. For some reason I can no longer
get into the Pogo game sit. Their instructions are to
uninstall Java and then to re-install it. When I try to
re-install Java I get a message that Compuserve has encountered
a problem and will now close. What is the problem between
Compuserve and Java? And how can I re-stall it? Thanks.

I too cannot get into Pogo. I get as far as trying to open a room to play and it just sits there!
I hate 7.0!!! I also, cannot get into Chat easliy. I have to go to the Chat I want ,then out of it, then to Blue Zone, and back to Gold Zone.
I want to go back to 6.0 for XP. It may not be the latest, but it at least worked.
If I had access to cable in my little hick town Id blow CS off and move on.
It seems to be Netscape, from what I have learned in the 2 years I have had 7.0 that is the hitch.

Version 7.0 has a problem with the Netscape Browser they decidied to experiment with and also has a problem with the various plugins.

However, the Version 6.0 for Windows 95 thru Win2k or the Version 6.0.2 for Windows XP series will eliminate your problems.  However, if you are concerned about your Personal Filing Cabinet, it won't transfer backward.  I have all of the CS2000 programs installed on my various computers.  If you want to go backwards, let me know.  Let me know your Windows Operating System and I'll give you the easiest way.  Using Cable connection as I do, when I need to use CS2000, I always use the 6.0 or 6.0.2 version which is the most reliable.  Your call on this so let me know for a good installation of the program.

I have Windows XP. I want to reinstall 6.0.2 so any help you can offer I will take.
I dont care about my filing cabinet.
Wouldnt it be faster to get the disk for 6.0 for XP? Just delete 7.0 and reinstall?

Version 6.0.2 for your Windows XP is not on any disk, not even included on the 7.0 disk(which has )all of the CS 2000 programs "except" 6.0.2.)

It's only available at the download site

And downloading, it's listed as CompuServe2000 Version 6.0 for Windows XP.  With a dialup connection, it takes forever with a good connection.

Fresh restart of your machine and before you go online with your CS connection, turn off your AntiVirus Program or any major firewalls like ZoneAlarm.  Now sign on if you are satisfied that they have been temporarily turned off or temporarily disabled.  I can't give you the procedures for Norton since I'm on the road without the benefit of my main computer or other laptop.

Access the download site, select the correct one, then use Run from the screen instead of save.  Run it and one finished, Run again to install it.  Now use Current/existing member and on the second screen to install a fresh program, use "adding my existing account to this machine".  Now follow thru with the prompts, re enter your master screen name and password and setup your connection again.

Now you have two programs on your computer, both of which will work one at a time.  If it works alright, then let me know if you have any files you want transferred, other than your filing cabinet.

Download site is here: http://free.compuserve.com/dnld/dnld_cs2k.adp

Kert,
In searching through my disks here I find a CS6.0 . It is purple. But doesnt say if its the XP version or not.
it does say NEW! Version 6.0.
I wonder if that is the right one?
I will delete 7.0 which has a few tricks I like, but not worth the hassel.
Thanks

No it is not. Kert just told you it is not the right one. That is why he gave you a link to the download page for version 6.0.2
