My Top 5 would have to be: (5) "Tears of a Clown" by Smokey and the Miracles -- a wonderful blend of a schlock carnival theme with a driving big band, and NO strings ! Plus, how many other songs can mention Pagliacci ? (4) "Baby, I Need Your Loving" by the Four Tops -- smooth vocals, with counter-backup vocals leading to the chorus in the last verse; great horn arrangements, too (3) "Money" by Barrett Strong -- raw energy, it was the song that put Motown on the map, and has probably been covered by more artists -- including The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Kingsmen -- than any other Motown song (2) "Mickey's Monkey" by Smokey and the Miracles -- a fun tune with great baritone sax work throughout, and excellent single-string guitar work and horn arrangements (1) Some fellas look at the eyes Some folks look at the nose Some fellas look at the size And some folks look at the clothes Now I don't care if the eyes are red And I don't care if the nose is long I don't care if she's underfed And I don't care if the clothes are wrong Why? Oh, Why? 'cause "First I Look at the Purse!" -- by the Contours, one of the numerous Motown groups that almost always gets overlooked Robert O'Brien Huntington Beach, CA |
