Seems fake and the web site listed on the bottom of the image seems to be about funny pictures.

<<Seems fake ... >>
.. you move to California and your memory goes kaput!! You should know that's a Jersey City Sand Crab (JCSC) which is a well-known evolution anomaly ... somehow when the seas receded a few eons ago, they got left behind and learned how to subsist on dry land which was OK since they really didn't bother anybody (there wasn't anybody to bother .. ). Even the advent of man in the form of the fearsome Lenni-Lenapi, the Indian terrorists of the Jersey Coast, didn't screw up their evolution as they generally remained no bigger than the palm of your hand. Then came the White Man, followed by civilization ... then toxic dumps appeared in the Meadowlands, and nature went nuts and gave rise to the Jersey City Sand Crab (some people think nature went nuts when Jersey City arrived on the scene, but that's a story for another day) - you think NYC rats are tough critters, they don't stand a chance against the Jersey City monsters .. the story goes that the NYC sewer system is now alligator-free thanks to the JCSC (they swam across the Hudson) .. New York is currently in a panic, since the crabs are now feasting on those fancy-schmancy dogs prancing around Central Park .. for some reason, they prefer poodles .. !!
.. word has it they are getting bigger, and in search of warmer surroundings .. they have been spotted in small numbers west of the Mississippi and are expected to reach CA in about eight years. They are immune to poison, and very hard to trap .. the only way to kill them at this time is with an AK47 loaded with armor piercing shells. Supposedly, the crab's shells are growing harder on a geometric scale, and it is feared that by the time they reach the west coast, they may be immune to man's attempts to control their growth.
There is a rumor that the CIA is trapping as many as they can catch, and turning them loose on the Afghanistan/Pakistan border in an experiment to stop the flow of terrorists roaming the mountains over there ... Supposedly, after a couple of days crawling around the barren landscape with no food, they really get mean and turn into man-eating fiends .. Go Crabs!!!
Hey, you think property values are down now, wait till the JCSC's arrive on your doorstep ... they'll be pretty hungry after crossing the Rockies .. :-)

The critter is real, although the photo as a whole might well be a photoshop job. ICanHasCheezburger.com generally allows people to upload pictures from any source, real or fake, so long as they have permission from the copyright-holder. Then they add the caption using ICHC's own image-changer.
Anyway, the critter in the picture is a
Coconut Crab
, a kind of gigantic hermit crab that's found on any of a bunch of islands and atolls in the tropical Indian and Pacific oceans. Biggest land-living arthropod in the world, and one of the biggest arthropods of any kind. Compare your picture to the crab on the left in
this picture
; the similarity is obvious.

What a wonderful creature! I had not heard of them. I thought it was remarkable that they can't swim and will drown if they fall in the water. Since they do moult, that could be an empty shell which someone attached to the garbage can as a joke but it certainly could be a Photoshop job.

Now, now, don't go all crabby on us.
Coconut crabs are one of those critters that are funny without embellishment. I mean, a crab that can't swim but can climb trees? Proof positive that the Universe has a sense of humor, and ain't above a real old-fashioned bender on occasion.

We did a lot of nuclear testing in the South Seas. Your documentary is no doubt true, and these New Jersey cousins of the Bora-Bora Coconut crab will arrive in CA just as half the state will have broken off from the mainland in an earthquake and I will be living on a beach where crabs belong.

.. I'm having crab cakes tonight - picked the big old blue crabs myself; no filler .. nothing but lump crab.
I'll have a cold brew (or two) and give you a little toast as I sprinkle a little Old Bay here and there ... :-)

Have yuo tried New Bay seasoning, so-called because it is extracted from foam on New Jersey beaches?

Most unfortunately your half of CA will be a bit too far underwater to do more than swim with them. No way to make crab cakes down there. <ggg>

After the quake hits, when I'm prime beach front property, I'll just mosey on over to the nearby Marine base and boost a couple of flame throwers. We'll have crab for dinner. Of course, we'll be a bit post-apocalyptic so wine will be hard to get to go with it (along with most everything else), and the beer will be warm, but those are all mere details. '-}

.. flame-broiled crab and warm beer (warm is better than none); can I come; I'll bring the salad - hope you aren't fussy about what I put on it ... :-)
