Fort Hood Killer: A Ticking Bomb?

Was Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan,  the shooter at Ford Hood, a ticking bomb that the military should have detected?

That's an inevitable question, as details about the accused shooter emerge.

As an AP article in today's Netscape News informs us:

But his record wasn't sterling. At Walter Reed, he received a poor performance evaluation, according to an official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case publicly. And while he was an intern, Hasan had some ``difficulties'' that required counseling and extra supervision, said Dr. Thomas Grieger, who was the training director at the time.

At least six months ago, Hasan came to the attention of law enforcement officials because of Internet postings about suicide bombings and other threats, including posts that equated suicide bombers to soldiers who throw themselves on a grenade to save the lives of their comrades.

Investigators had not determined for certain whether Hasan was the author of the posting, and a formal investigation had not been opened before the shooting, said law enforcement officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the case.

  See this link for more.

Was this tragedy something the army should have foreseen?  Or is the final irony the fact that Hasan, an army psychiatrist, the very person the army would have trusted to see the potential for this to happen?

Is there a way to prevent this from happening in the future?

What do you think?

Everybody's a Monday morning quarterback.  It's not that easy to tell when someone's going to explode.  I bet it's a lot harder when it's a trained psychiatrist.  Did it ever occur to you that maybe he'd be good at disguising his intentions?

"Soldiers who witnessed the shooting rampage at Fort Hood that left 13 people dead reported that the gunman shouted "Allahu Akbar!" - an Arabic phrase for "God is great!" - before opening fire, the base commander said Friday."

I'm sure this is just a coincidence.

As anyone with a television set already knows, a mental health officer at Ft. Hood, Texas, went on a shooting spree and killed 12 people.  31 were wounded.  He was apparently upset at his pending deployment to Iraq.

Latest reports indicate that 12 were killed. Just another sad occurrence that can be blamed on these stupid wars which have caused so much misery for so many and such horrible loss of life. Not only American, but hundreds of thousands of Iraqi people have perished, millions more displaced and God only knows how many have been victims in Afghanistan. Men can stand just so much and multiple deployments to these war zones have taken their toll and will continue to do so until this madness is brought to an end.

Even though this killer has been in the Army for many years, it is now being reported that this would be his 1st deployment. I think that there may be another reason for him snapping.

That could be. A lot of those psychiatrists seem to have more mental issues than the patients they treat.

But---there's no denying there are serious mental and emotional issues plaguing those young people who are being required to serve second and third deployments and the situation gets more serious all the time with suicides, etc. I have a friend in Mass. whose grandson is recently back from Iraq. Physically, he seems ok, but mentally he is not and they wonder if he will ever return to the way he used to be. These wars are taking their toll in so many ways. They need to be ended!

This is very sad news and certainly no time for joking, but I couldn't help but notice the dark, twisted irony of a mental health officer suffering such a complete mental breakdown.

At this point, however, I will simply offer my sincere condolences to all the families and units involved.

When I was a Corpsman in the Navy,,, the  word going around was that docors and especially Psychiatrists had a very high rate of suicide. I was not sure if this was true or just a sea story.  I just went online and looked up what occupations had the highest rate of Suicide and  it states that doctors are extremely high.

The occupation with the highest suicide rate | Psychology Today

Very sad event.. to say the least!
