South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford is being accused of breaking ethics laws with respect to using taxpayer money for expensive airline seats, using state aircraft for both personal and political trips and using his campaign chest to reimburse himself for travel.  Sanford, a Republican who was involved in a longstanding extramarital relationship with an Argentine lover, faces 37 ethics charges.

SC gov faces 37 charges he broke state ethics laws

From the AP article on Netscape News,  linked above:

>> The civil charges, which carry a maximum $74,000 in fines, stem from a three-month investigation by the State Ethics Commission and could be pivotal in a push by some lawmakers to remove him from office. The state attorney general is deciding whether the governor would face any criminal charges. <<

There is a great deal more info in the article above.

What do you think about this?

Just how much trouble is he really in?

Is Sanford likely to be removed from office?

Where is this going?

Tell us what you think.

I don't know whether to feel sorry for Sanford or to hold him in contempt.  It's not just that he's another glibly moralizing politician who was caught doing the things he routinely condemned when others were caught doing them.  It's that he handled his indescretions so badly.

Remember when his staff came up with that incredibly lame excuse for his absence?  He was supposedly walking the Appalachian Trail and they could contact him at any time.  On the Appalachian Trail?  On his cellular phone?  You didn't have to be an expert on hiking or cel coverage to know that one was utter bullshipping.

And then we got the excuse that his infedility was somehow different from other men's infidelity because he was, ahem, in love.  Oh, but he was still going to patch things up with his wife.  Who threw him out.

All this from the guy who voted to impeach Bill Clinton over sex?

The hypocrisy is so thick you could scoop it with a shovel.

Is Sanford likely to be removed from office?

Hopefully. ...and..in a perfect world...that should be the least of his problems.

I would hope so, but I'd hesitate to predict what the folks in South Carolina will do.

That whole episode was like watching a train wreck in slow motion; I kept wondering how much worse it was going to become.

I am beginning to wonder why Sanford doesn't simply resign.

Q. I am beginning to wonder why Sanford doesn't simply resign.?

A. Pure arrogance and contempt for his constituents and his fellow government officials.  You have to know more about the C Street Club. They believe they are the chosen leaders of our country. In fact chosen by god. So, anything they do is  approved by god. So, he couldn't do anything wrong by nature of his membership in the Club. Got it?

I almost feel sorry for the guy when you consider the pathetic love puppy emails to his Argentinian honey. Then I think of the lies--to his wife, family, supporters, and the people of his state.

about his kids or his office?
Doesn't look like it.

Sanford is a product of his peers  , i.e., Kennedy  , Clinton . We the people don't stand a chance , the corruption in Government is so deep , you throw one out , you have two tomorrow , we the people don 't have to worry about the state of south Carolina , we need to worry about the state of the union .

<o> Sanford doesn't seem to have a conscience.

He does seem to have a strong ego, however. How can the same love sick puppy who wrote gushing emails to his Argentinian honey be the guy we see struting in front of tv cameras? And where's the ethics in treating the state treasury as an ATM machine for personal travel?

Throw the guy a fish.

The pols have backing to get elected from special interests--business, unions, big organizations--precisely because they can be bought. There are some honest pols, but not enough to overcome the dishonest ones.

The sleazy credit and debit card operations run by lenders are evidence our government is bought.

Thievery I can put up with. Actually, I expect them to take what is not bolted down. Lying, immoral, hypocrtical philandering is a whole new level of garbage. Yes, many politicians including several past presidents have philandered.  Sanford has taken it to a new level with the hypocrisy and arrogance.

America has some $50+ trillion of unfunded liabilities for Medicare and Social Security alone. The pols keep on spending because that's what we want.

John ,

I wish I had the answer , could start with the federal courts mandatory retirement age 70 , two terms max for senators , six terms max for congress , every spending bill put up for vote by the people , the list could go on . But whats the point , nothing will be done .
