RJ:

To ignore certain members, go to a message from the person you wish to ignore. Below the pane displaying that person's message is an icon: Options. When you point to it with your mouse cursor, you'll see a pop-up that includes "Ignore this Author." Click that to make it so.

I do not see that option.  Does it not appear if the author has a asterisk (*) after his name?

I saw it as the last of six options at the foot of your message to which this is a reply.

You name did not have an * in the header of your message, but when I clicked to post this reply, in the header of this Reply form, your name DOES have an asterisk.

Some long time ago, I believe that someone purported to tell me the significance of the *, but I do not recall now what it may have been.

Best regards,  4merCL

4merCL,

When I click on the Reply button, it seems everyone has an asterisk after their name, including yours.  That must affect the available options.  The question remains:  how do I ignore posts of certain users?

If I click on the user's name, a new window open as "Send a Private Message" with one of two options "Ignore Posts".  Would that do it?  Frankly, I would prefer not to send such a message if I can just silently have posts of a certain user not appear in my browser's window.

The asterisk indicates that the person has participated in the thread.

Yes, that should do it.  What you'll see instead of that user's posts, is the user's name with a red x through it or next to it, if I remember correctly.  I believe there is also the option to read any specific post if you choose to.  And then you can turn the option off the same way you turned it on.

Why don't you try it to see how it works?  Then you'll know for sure if it does what you want it to do.

You have to point the mouse pointer on the tiny  icon and not on the word Options -- it's fairly position sensitive.

A minor, picky question. I only have 5 options - Report Violation, E-Mail This Message, Print Message, Add to Friends and Ignore this Author. What am I missing?

Do not click the Reply button on the incoming message as you read it. Right next to the Reply button is the Options button, which you should click. I believe that it will offer you six (6) options, of which Ignore will be the last.

>> If I click on the user's name, a new window open as "Send a Private Message" with one of two options "Ignore Posts".  <<

I believe this is an alternative way to accomplish the same result. But, I cannot speak with the certainty of experience.

>> Frankly, I would prefer not to send such a message if I can just silently have posts of a certain user not appear in my browser's window.  <<

If you simply click the Ignore, I do not believe that any message will be sent. I think that it will merely set the Ignore for that poster.

Best of luck.  Let us know how things work out for you, and which route you took to get there.

Best regards,  4merCL

Thanks, I think. Now I'm going to have to spend hours trying to figure out why I don't have it. Maybe the fact that I'm using Firefox has something to do with it.

Probably wrong browser and/or OS. I do not have "Bookmark..." and I assume it is because I am running Safari on OSX.

Don't reply; after all, you want to ignore the person. Find the person's post in a discussion here, and immediately to the left of the Reply button you'll see the Options button. When your mouse nears the button, a menu will fly up; choose "Ignore this Author."

Tim,

Found and applied the "Ignore this Author" choice.  However, even though it is in effect, I still see messages by the undesired Author in various threads.  Isn't the Ignore option suppose to hide anything written by that Author from my eyes?  That's the result I seek.

I understand that I may still see messages written by others to that Author (although I just as soon have those messages hidden as well), but I definitely should not be seeing anything written from that Author to anyone.

RJ:

You won't be able to ignore anyone before you log in. You typically are not logged in until you post or reply to a message, click a Log-in link, or visit My Stuff.

Otherwise, yeah, that's how it's supposed to work: The ignored person's posts should just show up as a header, for lack of a better term, with no content. I haven't experimented with it for more than a year now, though.

I can think of one remote possibility that I'd rather discuss off-line. Feel free to click on my name above to send me a private message, but click to e-mail it rather than send it. I'm in the process of moving, so I won't be around for a week or so. If you don't write soon, it'll take me a while to respond.

It was the browser and didn't take me hours. I just opened IE and the Bookmark option was there. I should have guessed, since the way Firefox and Netscape treat bookmarks is a lot different from the way IE does.
