Ms.Carey is indeed very talented. Unfortunately, the material has not matched her talents at frequent times. Perhaps this is due to the choices made by her producers or choices made by her to play to the largest demographic group. In my opinion, humble as it may be, she is having trouble adjusting to the fact that she is no longer 25 but now 35 years old and it is not as appealing as she once was. The sexy clothes are no longer age appropriate, and her physique, while still very attractive, will be harder to maintain.
She would be better served to avoid the "Daisy Duke" shorts, bare midriffs, and low cut blouses. Leave that for the younger singers who need to show off their "assets" more. At this point in her career, she needs to become more mature in her choice of material and a change of image in this direction would serve her well. It would ultimately be the direction ex-husband, Tommy Mottola wanted for her to begin with but she rebelled against, but now would be better for her in the long run as an artist.
She should also explore doing classics, and large orchestral arrangements that explore the range of her voice. I listened to "Vision Of Love" and there is so much more that she can do in the ballad direction. So far, she has left that open for Alicia Keys to take over. Mariah should seek out a good male singer for duets;think of Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack. Each step should extend her career arc 5 additional years. Diana Ross did this with several albums as well. But the time is now to begin this; her fan base has aged 10 years along with her, and the new fans have their own favorite singer now and tastes have changed. So should Mariah. |
