My brother went thru  a "transition" back when it was still a fairly new operation.  I've so I've seen the process.  I also watched the several 20/20 airings about children who were not "identifying" with their "assigned gender".   So they were living as the gender they felt comfortable with and I guess with the possibility of a full  transition in the future.  

Heres the thing.  My brothers descision was based on what he percieved a "Man should be."  Imposed by society, and due to severe handicaps he felt he did not fullfill that "male role" as well as he should and therefore "God made a mistake and it should be corrected."  So in the 20/20 show there was a family  that had twins.  1 boy and 1 girl.  Well that family appeared to overstate what  the roles a girl should fill and what a boy should fill.  Down to something as mundane as taking issue with the son while still a toddler asking to drink out of his sisters 'pink cup.  Then in watchin the story further, it seemed that that family made being a girl look like so much more fun.....why wouldn't the boy wish he were girl? 

So my questions are these.  How much of a persons decision for a transition rely on well meaning parents who jump to  conclusions and  are actually  subliminally convincing  their child they are  not "acting like a girl or acting like a boy." 

My other concern is whether the outcome of transition can sometimes be that the subject does not find the "happiness" they thought they would.  And then regret their choices.
