REACT: 'BALLOON BOY' INCIDENT

ACCIDENT OR PUBLICITY STUNT?

'Up, up and away in my beautiful ... my beautiful balloon.'

Those are famous song lyrics, to be sure, but they came true to life as part of a bizarre and frightening event involving 'Wife Swap' reality TV stars, the Heene Family, that truly captured the attention of television viewers around the world.

The Heene's 6-year-old boy, Falcon, was presumed to have been carried 50 miles through the sky from his parents' backyard on a homemade silver helium balloon after his brother mentioned that he thought the boy had entered a compartment on the balloon.

After an intense search that involved military helicopters, the balloon landed softly on the ground ... but with no sign of the 6-year-old.

Thankfully, it would later be discovered that the boy was safe and sound, hiding in a cardboard box in the attic of the garage of his parents' home the entire time.  The boy had fled the balloon's compartment prior to the balloon's liftoff, fearful after his father, Richard, had reportedly yelled at him for initially being in the compartment.

So, all's well that ends well, right?  Well, maybe not quite!

The family appeared later in the evening on 'Larry King Live' and sparked some controversy after remarks by Falcon, who revealed that while he hid in the attic, he heard everyone calling his name.  When his parents asked why he didn't come out, Falcon answered, "You had said that we did this for a show."

When Falcon's father, Richard -- who appeared to become agitated following Falcon's remarks -- was asked to clarify the response and question him about it, he did not do so and retorted "I'm kind of appalled after all the feelings that I went through up and down that you guys are trying to suggest something else."

Falcon's comments quickly sparked speculation amongst some of the show's viewers that the entire 'balloon boy' experience had, in fact, been an orchestrated stunt.

In an interview, Sheriff Jim Alderden has claimed that "At this point, there's no indication that this was a hoax," but reportedly added that he would meet with investigators on Friday to see if the case warranted further investigation.  Click here to find out more from AP.

What do YOU think?  Do you believe that the 'Balloon Boy' incident was a planned stunt, or do you believe that this was truly a horrifying accident?

The first I knew of the incident was a item on Netscape that said one of the boy's brothers said the kid was on the balloon but that later he was found "in a box in the attic." My first impression, therefore, was that 2 older brothers had talked little brother into a prank. I mean, what 6-year-old climbs into an attic to hide in a box on his own? For one thing, most 6-year-olds would have a mis-step between the rafters and come crashing down.

Today I hear the parents--at least the dad--was present when the balloon was launched. If parents are so involved in launching a balloon that they can't account for the whereabouts of their kids, then maybe Social Services should investigate the safety of those minors. Even Ma and Pa Kettle kept better track of their much bigger brood than that.

Personally, I don't believe the tale--this is a family with a taste for "reality" TV. I think they were just trying to get their ticket punched for additional appearances, maybe raise money for their "storm-chaser" adventures. Apparently it worked--they appeared on 3 news shows in one day, plus got video on the internet.
