Windows 7 retail was released on the 22 of October.

Upgrade advisor

To check your computer readiness for Windows 7, download the following:

Note.
Net framework for XP will be automatically be offered if running XP.

You can use Upgrade advisor if running Windows XP, or Vista. Download the appropriate Upgrade Advisor for your OS. I did not find Windows 7 upgrade advisor for 64 bit. May not ready yet.

Easy transfer is offered in the same page

Hi Carmen,

I found this Advisor for Windows 7 from Tech Republic. It is also a good one.

An article on Upgrading to Windows 7, which also mentions a Clean install of Windows 7. There is also a listing of messages sent and received concerning Upgrading Windows 7 as well as a clean install of it.

When you buy Windows 7 you have two DVD's in the box. One for 32-bit Windows 7 and one for 64-bit Windows 7. The same Product ID is used for either that is installed, so one Product ID is given.

As far as I know there is only one Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. This is for the 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7.

Unless there is a good reason, I would just run the MS Windows 7 advisor.

Are you sure of this? I actually downloaded from MSDN the keys for 32 bit as well as a different set of keys for the 64 bit.

Hi Carmen,

Yes, running the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor is the best thing to do, it you are going to upgrade WinXP SP1 or higher, or upgrade Vista.

My computer with WinXP SP2 basically fails. Some things are god and some are not good, but it still fails the Advisor. It also recommends 2GB of ram to be installed, I have 512MB of RDRAM.

Hi Carmen,

Yes. I also downloaded the 32-bit and 64-bit from MSDN. The Product IDs offered for both are the same.
And when Windows 7 is purchased at a store the one profuct ID will work for the 32-bit of the 64-bit versions. But you only can install one version. If you but a boxed Windows 7 from the store, you could buy one that has three licenses. Then you can install on three computers.

Hi,

I finally had some time, and i installed Windows 7 over Windows Vista. The process was smooth but took several hours. All went well, and all hardware and software is OK.

There is one problem, and it is major for my day-to-day work: the Google Calendar Sync tool won't work any more. Outlook won't sync with Google calendar...

It is interesting how we had different installation experiences. I have installed W7 in 2 computers, but hesitate to upgrade other machines because I haven't decided the email clients I want.

Winmail does not work well for me, from Vista or from W7, so last night I relented and installed the latest Win Live Mail in Vista. One thing for sure, it took a seemly long time to install. I was surprised because I read an article from MS stating that the installation takes a very short time to complete.

Also, I have not decided on the format I want. Presently I have 64bit, but this format does take more space and some people still complain of lack of drivers. I am OK in these regards.

Still, I have decided that I will install clean in a new partition so that hopefully I will still have a working partition in this computer.

BTW after installing Win Live Mail, I could not open OL 2007 in Vista. It seems that this was because the path was lost, because running the OL fix utility fixed the problem. I also installed new Vista updates, but the computer was re-started a few times, with no problems after that.

After running OL and OE for so many years, it does take sometime to get used to Live mail. I am keeping OL as my main mail client.

I use Outlook 2007. Windows Live Mail is only for accessing newsgroups. I'll have a look and see how it behaves on W7.

Hans, I still have WinMail installed, and as far as I know, it collects mail for others. In my case, it seems to collect mail, but I cannot find it. I use OL 2007 so I do not need Winmail for fetching mail. However, particularly private NGs ask for a minimum of 1 email account installation.

There is also a patch that will fix WinMail in W7 so that it works, but I am not sure that I want to do that.

Hi Carmen,

I could have a look at Windows Live Mail on Windows 7 and I do like it!! I use WLM for accessing newsgroups and reading RSS feeds (it sees and reads the RSS feeds added to IE8). It does both things very well.

Glad that this is the case. I understand that most of the problems have been fixed in the last update, only a couple of days from the Windows 7 release.

Yes, I would give it a try.

I will try it again when I install the remaining Vista computer. But since it is a clean install, I will not know how it transfers settings and folders.
