I have Excel 2003 and 2007 installed on my computer.

How do I set Excel 2003 as default when double clicking on a file with .xls extension?
Tried "everything", but 2007 keeps on firing up.

Julian

What do you mean by "everything"???

Right-click on an XLS file | Open With | Choose Program | Locate Excel 2003 | Check "Always use" and OK your way out...

Dale, tried your suggestion. But Excel 2007 starts when double clicking on a file with .xls extension (and made with Excel 2003).

I was afraid of that - Excel 2007 probably resets the associations to it every time it runs...

Ther may not be a way for you to accomplish what you want...

I would do
Start > Run > "%program files%\Microsoft Office\Office 11\Excel.exe" /Regserver

I don't have Excel 2003 and 2007 installed on the same machine so I can't be sure it will work.

Julian --

I curious as to why you wish to default to Excel 2003.

IANM, Excel 2007 is backward compatible and should be able to handle your files which may have originated on the earlier version.

ADDENDUM:  In addition to giving whatever extra functionality that was developed into the later version.

Best regards,  4merCL

As a general rule, you should not develop a workbook on one version of Excel if it is to be used in an earlier version.

So, if the users of Julian's application run Excel 2003 he should develop the application on 2003.
If he developed it on 2007 then he would be likely to use features that are not available in 2003 and the application would not function correctly.

For clients who have a mixture of 2003 and 2007, I develop on 2003 and test on both 2003 and 2007.

Thank you for pointing out that which had not occured to me....that Julian's work might be distributed to other users who lacked the more up to date version.

In that case, creating in the earlier format is eminently sensible.

I should say that my face is red, in that I have relevant experience in a small office that had workstations with differing versions of MS Publisher and have been faced with portability issues when opening a document prepared on one station at a different one.  In mitigation, its probably been a couple of years since that was the case, as upgrades have brought the different  workstations pretty much into harmony.

Best regards,  4merCL

Hello Bill,

What setup do you use to test on different operating systems and/or Office versions?

(Could use dual boot or virtual pc)

Cheers,

Julian

I have Office 2000, 2002 and 2003 installed side-by-side on Windows XP as my primary system.
I use Office 2007 in a virtual PC (windows XP) on the same system - due to not trusting 2007 alongside the others when it first came out.

I also have a Vista laptop which currently has 2003 and 2007 side-by-side and 2010 technical preview in a Vista virtual PC.

I would tend to use VPC because that's what I am used to doing and it allows me to run both environments simultaneously (unlike dual boot).

Thanks for the tip: I got Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 running on my XP system.
