I like to run my old DOS based benchmarks on a new PC but this is not possible with 64-Bit Windows. Some time ago, I produced a DOS boot CD that included the programs. The problem there is that some benchmarks try to save results (to read only media). I decided to make a bootable USB memory drive. There seems to be dozens of different methods to do this but the first one I tried did not work. The PC I tried it on, with an Asus P5B motherboard, has a BIOS setting to enable Legacy USB Support, but the drive did not appear in the Boot Device Priority list. Any suggestions?

As it happens, it does not matter much. When I boot with the CD, the USB drive appears as disk C. That means I can run my old benchmarks, with file output, and other DOS applications. In fact, the oldest benchmark is in BASIC, where I have to load QBASIC to run it.

Which tool did you use to create the bootable thumb drive?  I use HP's tool and that requires DOS files - I still have a W98SE folder on my HD and I point the tool to that...

I use the bootable thumb drive for BIOS flashing and that has worked well...

>>has a BIOS setting to enable Legacy USB Support

That is not the same as the Motherboard BIOS being able to boot fro a USB device.  That is for USB mice and keyboards being available in DOS and Windows Safe Mode...

The P5B most likely does not support booting from a USB device.  Your new system will as that feature is standard now...

As Dale says about the two BIOS/Motherboard settings involving USB & thumbdrives. I have not checked this in my current ASUS motherboards with Award BIOSes but on my Averatec laptop with a Phoenix BIOS (I think it was) you did not see the option to boot from USB device unless one was plugged in.

I had a long "discussion" about this with a guy who insisted this was not an option for that model Averatec while I insisted it was. He agreed with me after he checked with a USB device plugged in.

FWIW, I do not see any option in CMOS itself.  As you mentioned, once a USB device is attached, it then shows in the boot menu...

My Compaq desktop does the same thing. No USB boot option in the BIOS screens, but if I have a bootable USB device plugged in, I can choose the device in the boot menu that comes up when I hit Esc right after the computer is turned on.

I had the computer over three years before I discovered this.

Bart MKBT that seems to be popular. I tried the drive on my laptop, that does have the boot option, and it gave an I/O error. On preparation, MKBT indicated something about wrong type of FAT at FAT 16. Perhaps the 512 MB drive is too large.

Thanks, I’ll try that one. I saw it as one of the many.

I tried it on my last year’s Acer laptop. With no USB device plugged in, there are BIOS boot options for USB CD/DVD, USB FDD and USB HDD (that need moving up the list above the main HDD). With the thumb drive in, the drive label is identified under USB HDD.

Sometime in the future, I expect to be playing with Linux. I see that this can now be bought on a USB drive. Which one is a good one to start with or could I download a free one and install it on a bootable thumb drive?

Do these include the GCC compiler?

PMJI:

UltraISO can take a bootable ISO image (which is what most Linux distros use) and write that to a thumb drive that becomes bootable.  I used that to create a bootablw thumb drive for Windows 7 32 bit...

Thanks. BTW, I downloaded that HP utility (hpflash1.zip) and it works on my Acer laptop and the Asus P5B. For the latter, only one HDD appears for boot priority selection, but a second option allows the main HDD to be swapped with the USB drive.

Roy,

With ASUS mobos press F8 during bootup with the USB drive plugged in, option for booting from the USB drive will appear without you having to change the BIOS setting.

Actually, I did! When I couldn't find an option in BIOS for booting from USB, I checked for a BIOS update in HP's Web site but I already had the latest one. Then I used the Live Chat with an HP support person and I think he said there was no boot from USB option. It was 2006, so I found this very surprising, but I couldn't find anything to the contrary.

I didn't test it because I didn't have any bootable USB devices. But this past summer, I wanted to install VectorLinux 6 on my grandson's laptop and couldn't use the CD I burned from the ISO because his laptop's drive couldn't read home-burned CDs. So I made a bootable flash drive from the ISO and was able to boot it and install VL6. Later I got the bright idea to see what happened if I put the flash drive in a USB port of my desktop and see if I got an option to boot from USB with the boot menu. Lo and behold, I did!

So that's why I didn't discover that you could boot from USB on this computer until I'd had it for three years.
