DVD write problem

I have been doing a lot of DVD writing over the last couple of years and esp. most of this year, mostly of camcorder videos taken at my organization's speaker programs and oral history interviews. Also using Nero to make extra copies of those and other disks.

Starting yesterday when using Nero Smart Start or Express, all the copies were failing and wasting blank DVDs. I am still able to edit videos and write DVDs using Imagemaker 3 software that came with the camcorder.

I realized that I had been Hibernating and Resuming the computer over several days and this sometimes causes fragmented memory, which in the past has resulted in various kinds of program failure, so I recycled Windows. Still same failure. Tried Nero with option to test writing speed and still same failures. Copied a CD and that worked fine but not DVD. I have wasted 4 or 5 disks. Message included words "fixation failure". Last portion of NeroHistory.log attached.

Computer is a 4-5 year old Gateway tower computer, XP Media Center Edition SP3, 3 GHz CPU, 1.5 G Ram, Harddisk (C: partition) is 228 GB with 96 GB free. DVD drive is TSSTCorp TS-H552B. Driver is 5.1.2535.0 dated 7/1/2001. I looked into solutions including the need to update my driver or flash the firmware. There is a 2006 version so this seemed plausible. However in reading further, people were having lots of problems, esp. with flashing firmware.

CD/DVD drive failure is the #1 most commonly reported hardware failure in computers, and I do a lot of DVD burning and pretty much expect a lifespan of 1yr to 2yrs. And with replacement DVD drives costing less than $30 and taking about 10minutes to replace, it is not all much of a burden.

Since the drive actually has 2 different burners, one for CD and another for DVD, being able to burn CDs but NOT DVDs is not uncommon, indicates a problem on the DVD burner side of the drive.

I doubt it is a problem with Nero, and unless you have changed brands of media, it probably is NOT a firmware problem either - if it burned the brand of media well in the past, it should still burn that media well without any need for a firmware upgrade

Bottom line, probably time for a new drive.

Uninstall and reinstall Nero. If that still fails, it is most likely the drive that has failed...

I made the mistake of uninstalling Nero but am unable to reinstall. It came with the PC recovery partition and installed at first, but I don't see how to install it now without a complete recovery which I am not willing to do. Anyone have install disk for Nero or know of any other free or cheap DVD copy program?

I believe I have written DVD(s) with Imagemaker after failures with Nero.

Nero has a free version available of just the burning program. Nero's website. That's in case you don't have the serial number for install of the full verrsion.

DVD problems range from incapitable disks (cheap) to power supply issues to bad drives to dirty laser lenses.

Your link failed but simply nero.com got me to http://www.nero.com/enu/index.html; When there I didn't see how to get a free copy of Burn; just various and confusing free trials and cost packages.

As I think I have said maybe a couple of times, I have successfully written disks using Imagemaker 3 even after failures with Nero. I didn't also mention that I used the same TDK 50-pack for both and that I have run a head cleaner several times.

If and when I can find Nero to download and install, I'll try again. I have been successful today copying DVDs using Nero (believe the same version) on my Gateway laptop.

I have downloaded and will install the free Nero version 9. Thanks.

The version on my laptop is "6.3.1.17 Gateway" which probably came with the laptop that I bought in Feb. 2005. I believe that I had the same version on the Gateway tower computer which I bought several months earlier.

I have installed Nero 9 Free and it is vastly different than Nero 6. If starts from Nero Smart Start Essentials and I can see how to make one copy of one disk but don't see how I can specify to make more than one copy. So I made one copy and now it expects to read the original disk again for the next and each additional copy?

Unless I am missing something, this is a crippled and/or minimal function version. So maybe I DO want you to post 6.3.1.17 so I can download and install it.
