Rug clearners and vegomatics (still selling at holidays after all these years) or even Chia Pets..of course you couldn't make them look like peopl;e  but  chia pets sell.   People like plants that are hard to kill.

Vegomatics are facinating to watch work.  and people love them.  They buy them, and put them in drawers and say, "Wy didn't I use the Vegomatic to chop that onion? ? "  AFTER they have rubbed onion juice in thei eyes by accident.   Never fails.  Until the next time. <G>

I chop onions by hand quite often. I'll settle for a Vegomatic instead of the toaster. <G>

Shamwow Vince is now pushing something new and Vegomatic-y.  I missed the State Fair this year--it always has really good demos of all that sort of stuff.  So I guess I'll wait until next September.

If you find out that it works well and is easy to clean, let me know. Seriously. I often chop 2-4 onions at a time. Garlic is another thing that I chop a lot. Peeling each of the cloves takes time.

I'll stick with a good set of knives and a jar of minced garlic in the fridge at all times. I'm not one for a whole bunch of kitchen gadgets although J and I just got one of the Keurig coffee makers and I will admit I love the thing. I wanted a cup to go with a slice of homemeade sweet potato pie last night and the coffee was done in the time it took me to cut a slice of pie and throw it on a plate.

Problem is the price of the coffe cartridges.  As you know, I roast my own coffee and it would be nice if there were refillable cartridges that would go in those things.

I have a Krups with a thermal carafe that keeps the coffee hot for several hours without cooking itd

Sweet potato pie?  Oh,well, I'll just have extra hit of insulin.<g>   I did an apple crisp last night.  One of those peeler/slicer/corers make it easy.

Ask and ye shall receive, Keurig now makes a cartridge that you can fill with your own coffee and it drops right into the machine, costs $10 on Amazon. Add a book or two and ya can get free shipping. Even using the ready made coffee it runs about 50 cents a cup and I can live with that for the convenience and the fact that J and I can each have the type of coffee we prefer. The maker itself is pretty pricey

Sweet potato pie?

Yeah man,  I was one of the test cooks for an 18th century cookbook  (shameless plug)that a friend of mine was doing and there was a recipe for yam pudding in it that works great as a pie filling. It's pretty much a heart attack in a pie crust(lots of butter and eggs) but it's pretty tasty.

You may already know this, but I learned this from the Food Channel.  Whack each clove of garlic with the flat of the knife.  This loosens the skin, which will generally lift off as a whole.

For onions, I recommend contact lenses.  <g> Seriously.  Since I started wearing contacts (many years ago), chopping onions has no effect on me.  I thought for a long time that I had become immune, till one day I happened to have my lenses out for cleaning, and the fumes bothered me.

As for garlic, Opus is right -- simply smash each clove with the flat of a broad knife, and the outer husk comes right off.

I<<Peeling each of the cloves takes time.>>

I use garlic as a major ingredient in many dishes. I find that if I cut off the end of the clove and split it lengthwise - which I do to remove the green sprout in the middle that can be bitter - it is relatively easy to peel them. I have also heard that thwacking a heavy knife blade side into them helps. In any case, breaking the skin makes them easier to peel.

I looked on eBay, and even the used ones are not cheap.  There's also something called "My-caps" that replace the top of the cartridge and allow reuse.

For now I'll stay with my auto drip for quantity and the french press for smaller batches.

I looked up several recipes and they're all full of butter and eggs --  yolks, to be specific.<g>

Yum.

Is it one of those brown Presto pressure-fryers, or one of the expensive Swiss jobbies?  Or something else?

Here's a link to Shamwow Vince's web site for the Slap Chop.  (Looks like a new, improved Vegematic).

I don't know what's "not cheap" in your budget, but my husband has a device called a "My K-Cup Reusable Filter" for his Keurig.  $10.  Apparently you can put your own coffee in it.  I'm not sure if there's a paper filter you have to replace or not. LINK.

The better part of a hundred bucks for the coffeemaker.

Yeah, saw those on eBay too.

But I usually drink three or four cups by myself anyway.

Hey, it could be worse.  There's the 180 buck Technivorm drip, or any of the higher-end espresso machines.   You can easily drop $2500 on a high-end espresso maker that does everything, including emptying the grounds.

Gadgets have a way of taking up valuable counter and cabinet space. I bought Jack Lalane's Power Juicer a few years ago. It stayed in the box until this summer and I only used it a few times.

Ok, then, whack it with a hammer! (Disclaimer: I don't know if this will work, or if it will spread garlic all over your kitchen walls... but I'd bet it would be fun!)
