Can anybody tell me what kind of animal a glutton is, exactly?  (Mentioned in chapter 37, "Purgatory")  I looked on Wikipedia and found this, but I'm not sure if that's accurate or not.

Thanks,
Karen

Karen,

I believe it is another name for a wolverine.  That's the only North American mammal that seems to fit, and Google confirms this (with photos).

Hi Diana,

2nd question for you, Diana.

1. Why the lack of comments in  this section?  Surely everyone has read these chapters.

2.  Page 377.  Willie remembers being lost in a fog at Helwater, while Jamie was still there - so Willie was 6 or less.  Twice in the fog (on page 377), Willie comments that he heard "....the rocks talking to themselves" and later "..he began to hear the rocks murmur all around him."

And "he'd heard his mother (Geneva) whisper to him."  Later he called out to his mother and "she'd answered him".

OK.  Jamie doesn't have the time travel gene, but he does dream of things and people in the future (Bree, Rog, Jem and Mandy as well as Claire) with accuracy.  That's a special gift.

Could Geneva have the time travel genes or some other special gift she might have passed on to Willie??  Is it possible?

Geege

Dear Geege--

Couldn't tell you, but I think William just had a deep curiosity/longing for his mother, and was (reasonably) terrified by being lot in the fog on the fells at an early age.

Hi Karen,

You remember everything and  I am having a "brain burp" so I hope you can remember.

On page 397, Ian is talking about Emily to Willie and the fact that he is no longer wed to her.  Then Diana writes..."William felt a faint pang of sympathy, thinking of Margery.  He had thought of her only casually, if at all, in the past four years, but suddenly her betrayal seemed tragedy." (I don't know if this should have read ..."seemed a tragedy." or "seem tragic."); but, my questions is, who was Margery and what did she do???  I just don't ever remember a Margery ??

Margery's the whore at Nessie MacNab's brothel who was William's first, when he was sixteen.  Ch 36, "The Great Dismal", p 371.  He thought himself in madly love with her for a week, had gone back intending to propose marriage, then been thoroughly disillusioned when Nessie informed him that Margery was "occupied" at the time. <g>  Love that scene.

No prob.  When I read that scene you were talking about, I had to stop and think for a while, too. :)

I already knew about Ben Franklin and his daily 'naked time,' but I just ~hooted~ at Lord John joining him in an air bath. Just the thought of Lord John trying to be politely naked (and careful where he sat), discussing literature and politics with Ben. <g>

That was a gem!

Tess:

Yeah.  That was hilarious, and unlike you, I hadn't heard about the "air-bathing" before, so I didn't expect that at all.  When I saw Ben Franklin mentioned in the cover blurb, I figured it would be Jamie and Claire who would run into him.  (Yet another thing I guessed wrong about. <wry g>)  The image of Franklin's naked rear end, like that of Nathan Hale's tongue protruding, etc., as he was hanged, is going to be hard for me to forget!

I pulled your message into this thread in the interest of consolidating things, btw.

Wondering if I've missed something in these chapters. I think I'm recalling rightly that Ian knows, just from William's face, who William is? But does William know who Ian is, that he's met Ian before? I had it in my head that Ian knows William for sure, but that Willie does not remember Ian. And then Ian begins his short note to William by addressing him as "Cousin".

Help, anybody?  (Sorry if my question is unclear---sad to say, that's the cleanest I can make it :)
