Maybe Rachel will turn out to be the apprentice that Claire hoped Malva was.

I had the same thought as I was reading. The good news is that I believe she is the complete opposite of Malva in terms of temperance and she has been nursing for a long time. Perhaps she will also become a doctor.

Hi Ann,

I first thought Rachael too but then Denny assisted Claire with both Henri Christian and Henry's surgery. Plus Claire told Denny she would show him how to make ether. Maybe we all assumed Claire's apprentice would be a female because she had such high hopes for Malva but I whole-heatedly advocate for Denny to be the recipient of Claire's 20th century medical knowledge.

I think that Rachel is a view of Claire sans ruthlessness or a counterpoint - Claire is a woman who consumes a man's life and then leads him to deception, and violence he might never have come to if it weren't for her.  Rachel is one who leads Ian to other paths than direct violence that he might never have come to on his own.

Dana,

Yes, but Jamie is a violent man, with or without Claire. He tells Claire (somewhere) that he's a "bloody man". He does not deceive and become violent with people only because of his relationship with Claire.

I do however think that Rachel is capable of leading Ian to a less violent way of life. She does tell him at the end that while he may be a wolf, he is HER wolf! I like her very much!

I like Rachel too...I just never would have put her and Ian together. I thought it was gonna be her and Willie for the first half of the book. Ian's so...wild. I never would have thought of him and a Quaker lass...I hope they have the baby together than Ian wants so badly.

As odd as this sounds....I'm kinda jealous of Rachel...I was jealous of Emily, too...when he came back, it's like he was mine again. Now I gotta share him again. He's ummm...special to me.... :D

<blunt and clear and incredibly delightful>
Definitely!  The way William was disconcerted by Rachel's "directness [which] he was unaccustomed to find in a woman" (in the conversation where he accuses her of reading his letter and Rachel calls him a liar) reminded me of comments in previous books about how Claire must be an uncomfortable woman to live with due to her candor (LJ and Tom Christie both said things to that effect, I think).

And I'm just so happy Ian has finally laid his ghosts to rest and is truly happy for the first time since DOA.  He truly deserves it after all his trials and tribulations.

Danyun :)

I'll feel better about Ian's future when I see him confiding his deepest feelings and thoughts to her like he is able to do with Bree, and with as much trust and comfort.  I hope that is the type of relationship this turns out to be. As his father told him, that sort of mate is a gift from God.

I'm not saying that Claire changed Jamie's true nature or that he wasn't a "bloody man" to begin with.  I just think that it was exacerbated by Claire and her knowledge of what was to come.  Likewise I don't think that Rachel will change Ian's essential nature and he is a "bloody man" himself.  He tells her flat out that he doesn't think he has it in himself to be a quaker and that faking it would be no good for either of them, but she does lessen his violence some.

I just hope that he doesn't end up getting himself killed by trying to be less violent for Rachel.

I took Rachel's line at the end as an indication that she wouldn't try to change him because she knows she can't.  (Smart girl! <g>)

I did too :)  But , for love of the right woman, a man might seek to change his own nature somewhat.

Karen,

I thought that too. Rachel knows what Ian is and accepts and loves him, just as he is.
