The author of The Whale Rider, Witi Ihimaera, has issued an apology for plagiarism in his latest novel.

This sounds like an editing error in this case. That attributes were not added. How else do you end up with "no deliberate wrongdoing?"

Probably along the lines of what happened with my WWII book. A footnote got cut off a page, and I didn't catch it. The passage is still marked as footnoted, but there's no attribution to match it.

By the very small percentage they're talking about, it sounds as if he quoted a news story or something on that order.
