It seems that every time I feed these feral cats, a new one shows up. I feel sorry and I end up feeding it. Just in 1 week, there are 5 new ones. How do I stop this? I am spending $40 every 3 days to feed them. I need help and don't know what to do. Some of them are all malnourished that I just can't ignore them. What can I do? Help!!!

Is there a rescue organization near you?  They could trap and neuter them.  Otherwise, they are just going to keep on breeding and you are going to keep on feeding.

If you live in the US or Canada, check with Petfinder to find rescue groups near you.  They can assist you in spay/neuter which will stabilize the population.

When you put food out, you are essentially ringing the dinner bell for all around.

I've been trapping and spaying these cats, but I just can't keep up with the them. It costs me $300 to get 4 cats done and I don't have that kind of money to be doing it every week or so. And there is no such organization that will help me financially. I am retired and my income is only $2000 a month. How do I scare the new cats away when I feed my own? And to top it off, all of the neighbors don't even feed their cats anymore. It's really upsetting because these cats are hungry and the owners just depend on me and see me when I feed them 3 times a day.(That's how many times I feed mine.)

Alley Cat Allies to the rescue <g>!

Please go to this website:  You can get financial help:  http://www.alleycat.org/NetCommunity/Page.aspx?pid=191

There are many resources available to you, but you have to know where they are:

First, the best thing to do is to call your local veterinary offices and ask the what rescue groups (incorporated, non profits) are in your area.   I don't know if you are in a rural or densely populated area.   But, there are cat rescues all around and they will usually give you food for the ferals.

Or, go to Petfinder.com.  Pretend you are looking to adopt a cat.  Then, after you plug in your zipcode, up comes a list of cats needing homes with the name and address and phone of the rescue group or shelter housing that cat.  Call them, tell them about your problem.

Always comb the landscape.  Don't make one or two calls: Call lots of places that might help you.  Petco donates cat food to feral cat rescues - did you know that?  Ask them who gets this free food.  Get the name and call them.

Other pet food stores may do the same.

The website of Best Friends has a feral cat rescue network and forum with people all over the U.S.   Register, post your message in the feral cat network and they will help you with ways to get free food and also shelter set up for the winter time.

(I am a member of Ally Cat Allies and a Feral Cats Friend in my area, NYC.)

Important:  Are these cats getting trap-neuter-release services?  This is what is terribly important!  Call the Alley Cat Allies for help with getting this done, or your local cat rescue or shelter.  You will prevent more kittens from being born.

Are you in an area in which there are few animal rescue organizations?

I am pretty sure you can get low cost or free TNR services, even if the help comes from out of your area.

Here is one such organization:  Friends of Animals    http://www.friendsofanimals.org/index.html

They offer low cost spay/neuter certificates.  I would tell them you can't even afford to pay for the low cost ones and see what they can do for you.

The ASPCA in NYC and in other areas has FREE spay/neuter mobile vans.  Do you have an ASPCA near you?

What about the local shelter doing it for you?
