This problem just started and I was wondering if anybody else had the same problem and what did you do to correct it. Just within the last week our cat started pooping on the floor instead of in her litter box. She pee's in the litter box so I don't think she has a problem with the litter. At first we thought she just had to go so badly she just had an accident but this morning I saw her sniffing around the floor and her box and not one minute later she went on the floor just two feet away from her box. Any thoughts?

Ron

Often, when they defecate outside the litter box, but urinate in it, it suggests a medical issue.  If they have pain in defecation, they will avoid the litter box as they experience pain in the litter box.

So there are two major reasons.  An impacted anal gland, and constipation.  Both are easy to remedy, but it often means a trip to the vet.

If you know it is only constipation, then adding mashed pumpkin (not the pie filling, as it has spices) will give additional fiber.  Encouraging her to drink more can also help, and a fountain is often good for that.

If you know it is only constipation, <><>

Thanks for your reply but she really isn't constipated. She poops several times a day just not in her litter box. She seems to have a good appetite and drinks plenty of water. She hasn't been acting like herself for over a week but I chalk that up to one of the moods she keeps getting in. I would love to take her to a vet but I've been out of work for quite a while and really can't afford it right now.

Cats are very good at hiding illness. You mentioned she hasn't been acting like herself and I would say you are dealing with a medical problem. The longer you wait the more expensive the problem might become. Janice

If money is a problem, would your vet be willing to take a call?  And give you a list of possible problems?  Then, if one of them seems dangerous or uncomfortable for the cat, at least you will not ignore that problem and let the cat suffer.

If you can't afford to pay for a vet visit, how do you pay for your rent, food, gas, etc.?  Please don't get me wrong: I am just hoping you can pay for a vet visit if the vet says it is important.

If you live within calling distance of an ASPCA type clinic (non-profit), I am positive that they would be delighted to go over the situation with you on the phone for free.  Really!   They only want to help animals.  Also, vet techs can usually discuss the various kinds of problems you can might have, including behavioral ones.

Don't just "let it go" too long.
