After the sudden drop in the Dow this time last year, many investors were left to wonder what else could happen to deflate their savings and investments.  We came up with a list of some of the scariest - and potentially most costly - financial mistakes you could make. Take steps now to ensure that you don't lose money by making some of these big, bad choices.

  • Not rolling over your 401(k) savings
  • Living off credit
  • Not reading loan documents
  • Making the minimum (credit card payment)
  • Having inadequate insurance
  • Too many eggs in one basket
  • Missing the date (paying bills late)
  • Using your heart, and not your head

These may not really last forever, but they can sure cause grief for a long time. I've made a couple of these mistakes over the years, but I was also able to pull myself up in short order. Living off credit, and keeping all your eggs in one basket are two mistakes I think more are painfully aware of now. Would you agree? Are you guilty of any of these?

    Teri,

I've done all those listed.  In fact I use to borrow money on my visa to pay my mc and alternated every month.  Ofcourse, it was minimum payment.  I did that for a decade until I finally sold my house and paid off all my debts.  Ofcourse I went right back to the same old habits.

I remember writing a check for beer.  The owner wanted to see my checkbook before he cashed the check.  Little did he know I hadn't posted any checks for months. (G)  While I was there I bought a pink elephant that my wife wanted.  It was huge and I could barely get it in the back seat of my car.  She was pregnant and working two jobs.  I was working three jobs.  Best $25 dollars I ever spent.  We were so poor that after we wrecked a car (liability only) we bought a oil base house paint and brush painted the car.  Didn't look all that bad and I didn't have to wax it.

I'm much wiser now!  Totally out of debt and spend my days at the golf course.  I'm not too harsh on my kids but do try to teach them some financial cents (pun intended).

Being poor can be fun sometimes.  Being out of debt is better.

    Bob

LOL Yes, it can! And if you're smart enough to see it, it can give you a great perspective on life.

I'm guilty of not reading what I sign, when they say, "This document just says so-and-so."  Well, I really ought to read what that so-and-so consists of.

As for paying late, I have every recurring bill set up on bank draft, and I watch closely online, recording each on a spread sheet as it's paid.  I don't put things on a credit card very often, but when I do, I immediately pay it off online.  I have one card that I let get out of hand, and I'm paying it off at about 3x the minimum each month.  I hope to be able to put a lump sum payment on it soon, though I'm not doing anything I can't undo until I'm certain of what my income will be after Dale's death.

I try not to incur any bill I can't pay off online, as I have a psychological block against writing a check and putting it in the mail.  I'll call the creditor and give him my debit card number, if nothing else.  I keep a close check on both my bank account and my credit union account, as well as any credit card I have.  About the only time I use a store credit card is when I think there's a possibility I might return some of the merchandise, or when there's an advantage to using the card.  If there's an advantage, I put it on the card and immediately write the store a check for the amount I owe.

That's the one thing I'm good at. One of the very first jobs I had was a clerk  in Small Claims Court, and I saw too many get screwed by not reading what they were signing.

I might write one check a year. I love online bill pay. I don't even keep a check register anymore, I just keep track of my accounts online.

I HATE  reading loan docs, or any legal docs for that matter.  However Techie reads everything, he even reads the manual on products!!!

Missing the date (paying bills late)>>

I did this a couple of times years ago, and it is a nasty one to get off the credit rating!!

Same here.  When I went to the bank to get the joint account changed to just my name, they mentioned checks, and I said I almost never wrote them.  I have enough checks to last me the rest of my life, as long as I have a computer.

I haven't kept a check register in years.  I have a spread sheet where I keep track of the recurring bills that are paid by bank draft, and I log them in as they're paid.  Then I have an annual spread sheet where I paste in each month's expenditures on recurring bills and total them for the month and for the year, and total each line item for the year.  I don't really do anything with that information, but at least I can compare each year with the ones before it.   I just like playing with spread sheets.

LOL  At least you're doing something useful. Some months I actually keep track of my money to the penny, but most of the time I just keep a kinda running total in my head. It helps that there's not that much to keep track of anyway  lol

That "running total in your head" method will get you in trouble!  My oldest brother keeps track of his money to the penny, and I mean he keeps track of how he spends it, to the penny!  He's sort of pressuring me to do the same, but that would drive me crazy.

    Dot,

I put nearly everything on just two credit cards.  I use their money for a month, get cash back and can go online anytime to find out balance.  Additionally, if I have a problem with  purchase I can always stop payment thru card company.  They'll take if off the bill while they investigate.  When I go out to eat, I pay cash as there is no sense in spreading my card information around.  (Most firms don't do background checks on the waiters.)

I keep a check register, but mostly for backup.  I also get all bills electronically and thru post office.  Never know when the internet is going down or my computer is going to crash.

The one bill I do write a check for is the mortgage.  I want to keep it at the forefront and ensure I pay the extra principle.

    Bob

Yea, it has in the past, so I do pay more attention now. And darn it, I'm finding my memory isn't what it used to be. I probably need to go back to keeping a register.

At one time I would round off purchases. If something cost me $21, I would round it up to $30. Then in Dec, I would look at my real balance and use the extra for the holidays. Can't afford to do that anymore though.

I hate having to allow waiters to take my card out of my sight.  Some restaurants, so I've read, are adopting a system of scanning the card at the table.  When we ate out all the time, we paid cash.  I don't eat out now; I usually have a bowl of soup for supper.  I can't get interested in meals any more.

The one bill I do write a check for is the mortgage.

Hallelujah, I haven't had a mortgage since 1995!  I paid it off 10 years early so we could retire to a paid-for house.
