This holiday season, even as consumers say they're pulling back on spending, experts like Tod Marks, senior editor at Consumer Reports magazine, expect that purchases of unusual products will stay strong.

"A lot of people laugh at them but a lot more consumers actually pay attention to these things," he said. "There's some either underlying curiosity or promise or implied performance that underlies these things … it's putting a piece of bait on a hook and dangling it in front of some very hungry consumers."

Have a look at this list of unusual merchandise.

  • Handerpants - Yes, these are actually gloves designed to look like tighty-whities.
  • The Tiddy Bear - These attach to seat belts to relieve the discomfort from the pressure the strap can put on a person's shoulder and neck.
  • Pup To Go - This is a dog carrier that straps onto a person's chest and abdomen, similar to a baby carrier.
  • The Comfort Wipe - It's an 18-inch paper extension arm and toilet paper holder.
  • Big Daddy Driver - A combination golf club, and weed whacker.
  • Winkers - This company decorates pants so they 'wink' when you walk. The wink is the crease between your buttock and the top of the leg.
  • Snuggie for Dogs - The blanket with sleeves, this time for dogs!

The seat belt thing ... maybe. As for the rest, I'll pass.

Will any of these be on your Christmas shopping list?

I have seen padding for the seat belt, is that what the tiddy bear is?  If true, I would buy a set if I could find them.  More and more that dang seat belt is bothering my shoulder and chest.

They do make sense, like I said some friends have sheepskin covers for the seat belt and it sure makes a difference in comfort.  AND as much as I am in the car would be a relief!!

  • The Tiddy Bear - These attach to seat belts to relieve the discomfort from the pressure the strap can put on a person's shoulder and neck.

  • I use an imitation fur thingy that I bought at a local auto store to keep the seat belt from sawing into my neck.  Wouldn't be without it!

  • The Comfort Wipe - It's an 18-inch paper extension arm and toilet paper holder.

  • Don't laugh at this one!  When I had a lumbar fusion, I used a product called Bottom Buddy.  Since I couldn't bend at all, it was invaluable.  My neurosurgeon thought it was the product of absolute genius and was miffed that he didn't think of it himself.

Many cars come with a clip on the belt itself.  If adjusted correctly it keeps the belt off/loose enough but still effective.  The worse thing you can do is not wear it as it was designed.  You'll cause more damage than if you didn't have one on at all.

Years ago when I was assigned the additional duty of safety officer.  The military was always trying to get young (I'll live forever) kids to wear the belts.  We would put crushed cars (post accident) in plan view.  It was a short term effect.  One that seemed very effective was a ride-putting a rollercoaster car on about a 30 yard rail.  Take the car up to 15 miles an hour.  The two passengers were strapped in with safety belts.  All was fun and joy until the car came to a immediate dead stop at the end.  Most were believers.

This would have been a great product for my mom before she had her colostomy!

Bottom Buddy, lol, that's a cute name.

My young adult kids drive me crazy. They still have the nerve to get in my car and not put on their belts. Every time, I tell them the car will not move until all are buckled in. And now I tell them that THEY will have to pay the ticket if I get one. Of course they try to say oh mom, nothing will happen, but I remind them how expensive they are. There are times I think my children must be brain dead!

I thought so, too.  A friend in another forum very cautiously and delicately brought up the subject and introduced me to the product far enough in advance of my surgery that it came in the mail the day of the surgery.  Since then, I've been their free advertising agency for anyone planning surgery that wouldn't allow them to bend.
