Dealing with an insurance company can be tricky. After all, they don't want to pay out money that they don't have to, and sometimes they don't want to pay out when they SHOULD.
Here's a list of things that you want to be careful of when filing any claim:
Don't begin your claim with, "I think" - If you're not sure, don't guess. What you say could cause your claim to be delayed or denied.
I got whiplash - It's such a favorite of fraudsters it's likely to get your claim flagged.
It's an experimental treatment - These are not typically eligible for coverage.
My basement flooded - Acts of nature are not covered under a standard homeowners policy. If your pipes burst, say so.
Just send me a check - If you imply that you're not going to use the money for the intended purpose, you may lose out altogether.
I've been lucky. In all the years I've had insurance policies, I've never had to put in a claim. A couple of times I had things that might have been covered under my homeowners policy, but they were less than the cost of my deductible, so no use even contacting my company.
Do you have any horror stories when you've had to deal with an insurance company?
