OK, just watched Pelham 123.  Here's a huge pet peeve of mine, when ever Hollywood discovers some new technique or technology, they wear it out.  Matrix may or may not be a good movie, I don't know because I haven't seen it.  I don't want to see it because of that stupid deal where they slomo the field and then have the hero replicated over and over in quick time.  I'm describing it half-assed, but you no doubt know what I'm talking about and have seen it in a dozen other movies.  Seriously stupid.

Well in Pelham, the director had WAAAAY too much making me dizzy with the technique where the two actors stand in the middle and the camera circles around them over and over again.  He also WAAAY over used a technique where he blurs the background and smears it to show motion against the main character.  With all that crap going on, it was distracting from the story.  Instead of getting caught up in the story, you keep looking away from the screen because the photog is so crappy.

SO what's the movie about?  Doesn't matter.  It's just another guy hatches plot to make millions by terrorizing NYC kind of story.  If you like hearing the F-bomb, you'll love the dialog.  John Travolta is supposed to be a former Wall Street big wig and is manipulating the markets.  Trouble is, if you know ANYTHING about the markets, you know that for him to convert $2M into $300M in a few hours, and then extract the money from an account is stupid beyond words.

What else was dumb?  NYC cops can NOT drive through the streets of NYC without crashing.  You would think they would have learned how to control stop lights, radio ahead and put foot cops out to control traffic at intersections, stuff like that.  But NOOOOO, they just pile up dozens of cars and drive fast till they hit something.  And why oh why do the cops ALWAYS have to start their trip on the far end of Manhattan and drive all the way across town?

And here's a hint to the movie cops.  ANY time bad guys do anything bad in a subway tunnel, break out the old maps because the bad guys are planning to escape using that old abandoned tunnel that everyone else has forgotten about.

You see, ignorance has its price.

I'd say, "I'd like to introduce you to Tony Scott" but I somehow think you wouldn't get it, or learn from it.

No on two counts - that stupid special effect I hate and Keanu Reeves.

And I love scifi.  But no thanks

>>I'd say, "I'd like to introduce you to Tony Scott" but I somehow think you wouldn't get it, or learn from it.<<

YSUHW - but I'm not alone.  This was the only link I tried when I googled Tony Scott

http://www.hollywoodchicago.com/news/9193/blu-ray-review-washington-scott-take-pelham-123-seriously

from that site:  With his ever-changing frame rate and rapid editing, Scott speeds through his story until he lands on a part that sparks his interest; often a moment of physical or emotional violence. This plays out in extreme slo-mo, halting the movement and blurring the action to such an extent that the audience feels like they have been punched in the head.

Maybe Tony Scott is famous for this kind of crap movie making, but that doesn't make it good because it takes the viewer out of that suspension of disbelief state and makes him think about how hard the movie is to watch.

Did I say it was good? I simply said (in essence) "forewarned if forearmed".

I actually did like this better than some of his previous work—but, yeah, it's pretty much all drowning in conspicuous camera work. Lots of visual noise. Lots of noise noise, too.

Worst is probably Man on Fire. It's so noisy (audio) that parts of the dialogue are subtitled. Not regular subtitles, either, but words flashing in the middle of the screen.

If you stick with his movies prior to say, Enemy of the State going back to Top Gun, he's more conventional. I thought his first movie (The Hunger) was overwrought, and all of his movies tend to be loud (Beverly Hills Cop II, Days of Thunder)—but sometimes the story carries through that, I think.

But I haven't been surprised by one of his movies in years, if you get my meaning.

You typically get defensive about all things Hollywood, I thought you were at it again.

I didn't ask (nor do I care about) your opinions; I'm foolishly trying to forearm you.

But then, maybe the reason you see movies is that you don't want to enjoy them. You wouldn't be first who preferred bitching to other activities.

Let's see, I've recently posted positive comments about  Airplane, Boy in Stripped PJs, Holy Grail, and a few others.  Let's see, scrolling thru my recent Netflix history of the last two months...I didn't post reviews but liked Defiance, Hanna Montana (HEY! I watched it with my teen), 7 Pounds, Not another Teen Movie, Bedtime Stories, Catch me if you Can, Galaxy Quest, the 3 Bournes, 17 Again (see comment after Hanna).    For TV, I don't watch any prime time as it's broadcast except for sports and news.  But my two fave shows which I wait for to come out on DVD are Big Bang Theory and Heroes.

But I do admit, I get more motivated by a movie that aggravated me for wasting my time, so I tend to comment more often on those.

Yeah! You know who I really like? Hitchcock! And, I'm going out on a limb, but Frank Capra made some good movies, too!

Let's see, scrolling thru my recent Netflix history of the last two months...I didn't post reviews but liked Defiance,

I picked Defiance as my favorite of 2008.

Hanna Montana (HEY! I watched it with my teen), 7 Pounds, Not another Teen Movie, Bedtime Stories, Catch me if you Can, Galaxy Quest, the 3 Bournes, 17 Again (see comment after Hanna).

I find Galaxy Quest very watchable. That's a very kind movie, given all the fodder Star Trek/Wars/Etc fans provide.

For TV, I don't watch any prime time as it's broadcast except for sports and news.  But my two fave shows which I wait for to come out on DVD are Big Bang Theory and Heroes.

Can't cast any stones there. I don't watch...anything prime time. Well, not on the nets. I like some of the USA shows.

But I do admit, I get more motivated by a movie that aggravated me for wasting my time, so I tend to comment more often on those.

The best reviews are of bad movies, they say.

I've heard the original 3 Star Wars were pretty good.

>>I picked Defiance as my favorite of 2008.<<

Not my fave by a long shot and not a movie you can watch again and again.  That's my personal, highly biased, way screwed up was of measuring the greatness of a movie.  Do I want to watch it one a year for the next 20 years?  The Little Girl WHo Lives Down the Lane becomes my #1 by that test.

>>I find Galaxy Quest very watchable. That's a very kind movie, given all the fodder Star Trek/Wars/Etc fans provide.<<

WHich is exactly why I like to watch it again and again.  It's making fun of me and my teen years is a very good way.

I've heard the original 3 Star Wars were pretty good.

Overrated. Ridiculous dialog. Plot that wouldn't cause mental strain on a collie. Rip off of Kurosawa.

The second one's pretty good. The third one is abysmally cute and a harbinger of the next three.

Not my fave by a long shot and not a movie you can watch again and again.

Pick a better 2008 movie. If you dare.

That's my personal, highly biased, way screwed up was of measuring the greatness of a movie.  Do I want to watch it one a year for the next 20 years?  The Little Girl WHo Lives Down the Lane becomes my #1 by that test.

Dude, you know that's Jodie Foster's older sister in the sex scene, right?

There's a difference between re-watchable and "best", I think. I really thought Defiance took you to that time and place, and how tough it had to be. I've seen Burn After Reading, Wall-E, and Kung Fu Panda more.

I know you didn't like KFP but I've found it very re-watchable. Lots of nice little touches.

Most re-watched movie is probably for me The Big Lebowski,

WHich is exactly why I like to watch it again and again.  It's making fun of me and my teen years is a very good way.

And yet,  you didn't grow up and become a hipster-doofus Mac like Justin Long.

I probably can't, certainly without effort which I'm not willing to give you.  But even if it is the best of 2008, is that something to brag about?  And remember, I said I liked it.  It's just not a movie I would want to watch again.

>>Dude, you know that's Jodie Foster's older sister in the sex scene, right?<<

Yes.  She was 16 at the time.  And it isn't a sex scene!!!!!   DON"T YOU DARE TALK ABOUT JODI THAT WAY!!!!!!

>>There's a difference between re-watchable and "best", I think. I really thought Defiance took you to that time and place, and how tough it had to be. <<

Yes.  And just as I liked Boy in Stiped PJs for its rare portrayal of WW2 Germans, I liked Defiance for its all too rare portrayal of Jews who fight back.  I know these weren't the only Jews who joined resistance movements.  Why doesn't Hollywood show us more of those?  Why?  Because Hollywood is controlled by Jews and ...wait...let me get back to you on that.

>>Most re-watched movie is probably for me The Big Lebowski,<<

Haven't seen it.

hey JD!

There is a comedy movie you like about a married couple who are spies or crime fighters or something.  The bad guy wants tobe known as La Muerta (Death), but the good guy couple call him La Mierda (S#it).  You once said it was one of your faves.  I think "Blue" is in the title.  I can't find it.  I want to rent it on Netflix.  Make yourself useful, scratch your noggin, and think of the title.
