Help someone! I am having a problem with periods appearing at the ends of answers. I have checked the page layout and the period is in the layout section at the end of a sentence after Answer, but for some reason it isn't appearing. I have to manually put it in during my editing.
I do have two agencies that I work for, and each agency has a separate page layout, but again, I checked the layouts. Strangely enough, this problem happens only when I edit in one of the two agency work. Not the other agency work.
Any ideas?

Janet:

When those periods should get added is during translation. Have you checked your translation options? Are you using the correct page layout when you translate? Also, if you tinkered with the page layout itself, that will not change anything in the transcript once it's already translated, not even if you re-apply the layout. You'd have to retranslate to get that to "take."

The Catalyst manual says: "Ending punctuation only applies during translation. When you change the ending punctuation for a paragraph style during Edit or in Layout, the change does not apply unless you retranslate."

Hi Sheri-
Thanks so much for replying. Wow...so I just looked in Translation options and no where does it mention periods at ends of sentences. During the translation process, which is realtime for me, it allows you to use the page layout you wish to use. I apply the layout for that agency. That layout is set up to put periods at ends of answers. But in the tranlation screen there is nothing about periods at ends of sentences. I checked. It happens with the layout you use, which is correct.
Any other ideas?

And I hear ya on,"if you apply the change after the translation has occurred it won't affect the ones already translated." That isn't pertinent in this case, but I understand what you're saying.
No, that doesn't apply here.

All I meant about checking your translation options was to see that you had the correct page layout chosen. No, there is nothing in translation options about a period at the end of a sentence. I hope you can track this down! It wouldn't be fun to have to add all those periods later.

Oh, okay. No, what I do with this particular agency is apply the layout when I'm waiting for the attys to get there and I have opened the job. I apply this particular layout then. So it overrides the other agency's layout.
And let me tell you, it is finally where it's driving me crazy adding the periods.
I have tried a few different times to change it but I can't find what's wrong. That's why I'm writing in here for help. I usually exhaust all I know then come here.
Thanks for your help. I hope I figure it out, too!!

You DO need to get to the bottom of this and figure out why it's not working, but until then why not just translate with the page layout that works and DON'T apply the other layout until you finish realtime? Maybe all the periods would stay in there then.

Trying to diagnose something like this from afar is a bit hit and miss. But were I looking for what's causing the symptoms you describe, I would first confirm that the ending punctuation is defined for the ANSWER paragraph style. To do that, go to System Files\Layouts, double-click the layout(s) you intend to use for translation, and confirm that the ANSWER style has a period in the Ending Punctuation field (see attachment).

Then I would check your personal dictionary and ensure that the question bank (and any defined mistrokes) is defined as the <Question> paragraph style, no spaces, no other characters of any kind.

While in the dictionary, I would do a quick search to ensure there are no {No Ending Punct} realtime commands where they shouldn't be.

Other than that, I would be looking at a translated file and doing some forensic steno snooping to track down the problem.

Richard-
I love it, love your style. I did that first, checked to see if the period was in my layout after the Answer and it is.
And the search for {no ending punctuation}. How and what do I search for in the search box in the dictionary? I have searched extensively in my dictionaries, job dict, personal dict, et cetera and came up with nothing. Nothing funny came up or unusual for "answer" so far and in the realtime commands dictionary. But I don't check on the realtime commands dictionary to be included in realtime, so that wouldn't be it, although I did search there.
I'll keep trying....

You can simultaneously search all dictionaries in your user. From the main manage jobs screen, do menu Tools-->Search File Contents. Check the Text option, not Steno; click the FS (format symbol) button and select {No Ending Punct} from the dropdown list -- curly bracket realtime commands are at the bottom of the list; select the Contains location option; and then finally click Search.

If the search finds something, it will show you the file name, the steno associated with it, and the definition from the dictionary.

I would need to look at some sample files that are not translating correctly to get a better handle on this. If you give tech support a call I'm sure they can help you find the issue.

This is a little confusing. When you open the Translate dialog box to begin realtime translation, do you select the Layout for the preferred agency at that time, or are you starting realtime translation with the WRONG layout and then after Tran/Edit is open, then clicking Format, Apply New Layout? And if it's the latter - why?

Hi Cindi-
So glad you're on this. I always get answers with you and I appreciate it very much.
I set up my two agencies in the same user because at one point you said it was easier to do it that way. I was using a different user for each agency in the past and you had suggested it would be easier to keep them together, but to just identify them differently.
Having said that, when I open up in the translate screen at my job, the translate screen won't allow me to open a new page layout for some reason, so that is why I do the later, (per your email) I apply a new layout after opening up the job.
Any ideas or suggestions?
