Relayed from my kids every so many hours....It's been touch and go with their Dad...(Aortic Valve Replacement)

The surgery began around 9:00 a.m Thurs. morning until 10:00 p.m. Thurs. night....many complications from the triple bypass  and infections he had previously had. Was placed in ICU with chest open and wrapped in plastic(would you believe) to see if the bleeding/leaking at the (cow) valve would stop...It didn't....Blood wouldn't clot, kidneys started shutting down, swelling  horrible......Back into surgery Friday ....Good news...Blood started clotting...(time uncertain) ICU , but Doc. informed kids around 9:00 last night they were keeping him on Life Support and Dialyisis machine...Just heard this morning, (oldest Son) (SAT) they have taken him back into the OR........what's to come? God only knows...Please say a few words in prayer for my very tired and worried kids and their Dad..Thank you!!!

Poor man.  I hate to hear of anyone going through all this.  I even have my fingers crossed for him.  Sounds like he is a tough bird.

Me, either, Nancy.....as long as they can keep his vital signs at a certain level they'll continue to get to the root of the problem which is his blood....clotting in his heart but nowhere else...what do I know.....this kind of thing drives me nutz! I wish I could be talking to the docs out there.....kids are all upset and I know it's taking it's toll on them...

It sure is...He was 75 in June...baseball player in his hey-day......in good shape until he had a triple by-pass a few years ago locally and that Cardio-surgeon IMO, didn't know his Azz from a hole in the ground...but I had no say in it....Daughter and he made all the decisions.....

So sorry to hear that, Foxy. Sure sounds like he has been through the mill
and back. I was told the cow's valve was too large for me....so went with the
pig's.

I sure did not have the trouble that Bill has had, but they did have to put a
tube through my upper stomach and drain the blood that kept accumulating and
they gave me 12 units of blood, plasma, and clotting materials, etc. Had about
7 or 8 more tubes in my chest, neck, etc.

The drain was in til the day of discharge and it was still draining from the
opening some and had to change the patches several days. They told me I bled
that muchbecause of the previous surgery and built up scar tissue from it that
had to be cut away. Plus the scar tissue from gallbladder being removed last
September along with colon surgery. "The Zipper" as Cindy called me. LOL

I do believe that the doctors are in a competition with each other to see who
can get their patients out of the hospital the fastest....way before they need
to do so. :(

Taking him back to surgery today may be good news as I'm thinking they can fix
what's wrong. I sure hope so.

The kids got to see him a couple of times but my Jeff  couldn't take seeing him with all the tubes, swelling..etc.....he says he'll never forget it......very traumatic for my Jeff...first time he's ever seen anyone like this and for it to be his dad is taking this very hard.

Previous surgery messed him up,too, I guess......Doctor said his tissue was like wet toilet paprer...you would think they'd kniow this before they went in! If they get him fixed up we'll take care of him at this end...Daughter will see to that, trust me......haven't heard anything for a couple of hours but I keep thinking it's always darkest before the dawn....

<<<I do believe that the doctors are in a competition with each other to see who

Am not even thinking about it.......he has good insurance, thank gawd so imo, there's surely no rush....he has a long way to go.....might even have to recoup in a local nursing hme...we'll see......

They haven't closed his chest up yet so they must be making sure all's well before they do.........Imagine wrapping his chest in plastic wrap! Sounds like something out of Dexter!

I would think the air would do it good, but guess they don't
want germs to get into it.

This must be hard on all of you, Foxy.   It's such a feeling of helplessness but his  knowing that his family supports me and is there for him, will help in his recovery.

PS.  I was married to a Bill, too.

That's what I keep telling my kids, Bev...so far today I haven't heard anything but last night they started feeding him something through one of his tubes...Daughter said he has 2 more surgeries to go through...and one is to start removing certain tubes either today or tomorrow so things are looking up.......they won't close his chest back up until they're sure everything's ok......

That is great news, Foxy. I sent your post about Bill's condition to my daughter and
sister. They each said they would keep him in their prayers too and wished him the
best.

My best friend and I are about to go out of town to visit one of my aunts for the
day. She insisted on cooking for us. I told her at first we would come after lunch
as we did not want to put her to trouble for us. She said she needed an excuse to
cook. She lives alone also. She is the aunt who is 4 years older than me and we
have taken several trips together as have my friend and I.

We each have lost a son and that puts you in your own little club. Also, both of
them have Parkinson's.

Thank you, Sarah....Recovery is  going to be a slow process....He's still hooked up to the kidney machine and not sure if the swelling's gone down enough to remove the breathing tubes but I expect a phone call from Daughter anytime now....she said if he showed a good bit of improvement and doctor agreed she and my SIL were going to come home for a little R&R, God knows they need it...there's no place like home, even if it is for a few hours......

She had a great lunch ready for us. Chicken pie or casserole. She cooked the chicken
cut into pieces and placed the pieces in crescent rolls and rolled them up and put in
pyrex dish, covered with Cream of Celery soup, pimentos, and grated cheese and baked.
Was very good. I'll have to try making it. She also had sweet potato fries, English peas,
deviled eggs and lemom pie....all home made.

We got to her house around 11:15 a.m. and left around 4 p.m. and then stopped by
another aunt's house (her sister) and visited with her for about one and one-half
hours...got home around 7 p.m.

They both are my mom's sisters the youngest of 8 kids. They are the only two left.
The one who cooked for us is 77 and the other one is 81.

Sure hope Bill is still improving.
