Hi All,

Something on a lighter note. McDonald has closed up shop in Iceland probably due to the economic downturn in that country. No more golden arches for Icelanders for the time being.

OTOH, although McDonald has packed up, the restaurant will be privately run and will continue to serve burgers. Question is, will they be fish burgers? And if so, will they use 'square fish'.<g>

Good Evening Jake,

Wendy's is the square fish KIng.

Ooops, I didn't know that.

It's easy to get that mixed up with McDonald's "mechanically separated chicken" though."<g>

Both make me shudder!!

I have never eaten fish at Wendy's however the hamburgers are square. Therefore square fish.

Good Morning Jake,

I have never eaten fish at Wendy's however the hamburgers are square. Therefore square fish.<

Neither have I, and yes, I never understood why they sold square burgers, but that was prolly a sales gimmick. And logically, if their burgers are square, their fish is prolly square as well.

OTOH, I can't see where many here in MB would ever order a fish sandwich from Wendys or McD's.

The local residents are within a couple of miles of the "Seafood Capital of SC" where there are literally one fish restaurant after another for about a mile and where the catch is served the same day it is caught.

So, if y'all ever come here on vacation, you'll get the freshest and best fish and seafood right here.

Suzie, I'm gonna be awfully upset if Santa is late because Donner and Blitzen have been transformed into square burgers.<s>

My preference for seafood are oyster's from Louisana, or King Crab from Alaska. Otherwise
I do not care for fish.

Good Morning Jake,

I like oysters as well. My favorite way of preparing them is how I learned to first eat them in Oz. They were called "Oysters Kilpatrick" and they're made with bits of bacon and Worchester sauce on them. I haven't seen that served like that here in the States.

Did you ever visit Louisiana? There used to be a  famous Restaurant called, "Brennans" in New Orleans I believe and their beignets were heavenly as well as their other grub.

The only fish I eat regularly is Smoked Salmon, either by itself or with cream cheese on my bagel. Some of the best Salmon I've eaten comes from Scotland because it has a lower sodium content, but that's a matter of taste.

I shop at three different grocery stores regularly and only one has the Scottish type. I don't know where the other types come from but there is a big difference in taste and color between them.

Do Californians have a special dish that's sort of traditional or special?

I was trying to think what is popular here and fixed and the only thing I can come up with is chicken bog and I'm not sure whether that's state wide.

Good Morning Jake,

Mexican food.

Ahh, yes! We've got several authentic Mexican restaurants here along the Grand Strand that do a roaring good trade.

My late hubby and I used to visit El Cherro Grande every Friday. Good, healthy food, good service, good ambiance at a great price.

My son still goes and sometimes brings me my favorite take-out.<s>

Talking about food. I love fish and chips. However one time at Bondi, I ordered fish
and chips from a beach front vendor. It was so fishy that I could not eat it. Simple cod is my favorite.

Josh,

I love fish 'n' chips too. Robin Hood, on Burbank, has the best I've had locally.

Fish and chips was by far the most popular meal or snack food while I grew up in Oz.

We had our favorite fish n' chips shop and the meal was wrapped in white butcher shop paper and newspaper on the outside. Often coming home from school after basketball practice, we'd just buy a portion of chips,( fish cost more), make a hole in the top of the pack, pull out one chip at a time and keep the rest warm and snack on it while we walked home with friends.

We didn't have school buses and some of of us had long walks. It seems those were better times or maybe I'm just getting a touch nostalgic. We didn't seem to have a care in the world though.

Clem
