It's okay for Daddy to brag about his daughters and say how wonderful they are, but does he need to tell the entire country that Malia got a 73 on a science test? Granted, the next test she buckled down and got a 95, which is what one would expect, but come on Barack, give the girl some leeway. I hope you get it from her tonight when you get home!!!!

Here is what the President said:

"In our own household, with all the priveleges and opportunities that we have, look, there are times when kids slack off. There are times when they would rather be watching TV or playing a computer game than hitting the books. And part of our job as parents, Michelle and my job, is not just to tell our kids what to do, but to start instilling in them a sense that they want to do it for themselves.

So Malia came home the other day and she had gotten a 73 on her science test."

Wow..!   Some things are better left to the family quarters than sharing test scores with the rest of the nation -- and the world.  I think Daddy just may have got an earful when he returned home even if he had the best of intentions to inspire the country on standards.

That's almost as bad as talking about the kid's first "date".....<s>

He got an earful if and only if Malia is even talking to him.  If she is smart, she can milk this for something good. I would say a dog, but she has Bo already.(G)

Daddy had better have a real good explanation for this one! <s>

We can be sure he had the best of intentions, but it's possible a child her age won't quite get that. I'm betting both Barack and Michelle sat down with Malia and straightened the whole thing out. I'm just as sure it'll never happen again. <g>

The president hit it right on the nose with that one. I remember when one of our girls was having difficulties with her school work, and one very astute teacher told us that, as parents, we could try and help her in various ways, but in the end, it was up to her to motivate herself. "No one can do that for her."

Barack is right that instilling that sense of accomplishment in them is the way to go.

I'm glad neither child has problems in school because that'd probably generate even more press attention! <s>   While living in the White House has to be marvelous, and won't that first Christmas be wonderful with it decorated from top to bottom,  the pressure has to be so incredibly intense on children.   One wrong move and it's national headlines! <s>

Michelle Obama seems to be making the White House as "family-friendly" as possible, from the areas where the girls can play, to the now famous garden. If I remember right, she even has them making their own beds, just as they were used to doing. Hopefully this is all helping to relieve some of the pressure that's only natural for children of presidents living in the White House.

Both parents let it be known from the start that their children were off limits as far as fodder for the media. Either seem as though they would be fiercely protective of them in a NY second if anyone tried to harm them in any way, including writing anything about them in the media.

Still, they're dealing with the pressure; so far it seems like they doing a great job.

Yes, and that is why these girls will do just fine. Parents really do set the tone and help their children set goals.

Barack and Michelle Obama are good role models for all those parents who are overdoing it when it comes to helping their children with their school work and projects, etc. They aren't doing their children any favors when they step in and don't let them do the work themselves. They need to learn that you give something your best effort, and win or lose, you learn how to handle either. You don't call yourself a failure; you learn to recognize that you did your best and if that didn't work out, you vow to try harder or accept that maybe your strengths lie elsewhere. You don't learn any of that if your parents do all the work for you.

OK, what is forgiveness going to cost him?(g) Michelle is so strict, that buying his way out of it might not be an option.

I don't know what it'll be, but here's another story about the Obamas. <s>

Barack said this at a classical concert at the White House as he tried to make his guests feel at ease.

"Now, if any of you in the audience are newcomers to classical music, and aren't sure when to applaud, don't be nervous. Apparently, President Kennedy had the same problem. He and Jackie held several classical music events here, and more than once he started applauding when he wasn't supposed to. So the social secretary worked out a system where she'd signal him -- through a crack in the door to the cross-hall."

Said Obama: "Now, fortunately, I have Michelle to tell me when to applaud. The rest of you are on your own. "

They do seem genuine and relaxed, in spite of the natural tension that must exist being in the spotlight so much. They are the real deal.

It is wrong to publicly humiliate a child (especially one's own child who looks up to the parent for approval).

On the up side. . . every Einstein in the country might volunteer science tutoring.
