Whew!..  Halloween is over for another year.

I don't know why I'm saying "whew" since it was Yuko who did all the work, as usual.

The first trick or treater showed up at 7PM and we shut it off at 9PM.  In the two hours, Yuko doled out to about 85 kids.  This was a little less than last year when I think we did about 100, but it's still a bunch.  We even had one group of 3 young kids come back a second time but Yuko recognized them and turned them down.

Now I gotta turn the clocks back and then I'll be ready for bed...  connie

This year, for the first time in may, we had trick or treaters, but there were fewer than 10. This year we bought Skittles so the leftovers go to me as a treatment for lows. The packages are easy to carry and unlike glucose tablets they don't make me cough.

I think a lot of parents dressed their kids up and took them to the mall. Stores were giving out treats.

Here we had "Beggar's Night" on Thursday. I would prefer that it be done on the 31st but who am I to fight city hall. I had about 70 kids (the usual). It started at 6 and was supposed to go to 8 but at 7:45 when I hadn't seen a kid for over 15 minutes, I came inside and turned off the front light.

A "successful" Halloween, for me, is one where I don't buy candy, as no children have rung my doorbell in years. I have no porch light to turn on, so although I can hear the kids, I can't see 'em.

So, no candy in the house -- no leftover treats for me.

I'm afraid that I faded too abruptly last night to attend to clock resetting.

So, now I am faced with a self-corrected computer system clock, and four (4) household [wall, alarm, microwave and clock-radio] clocks which require my hand to reset them.

Best regards,  4merCL

I live in an out-of-the-way, [primarily] senior housing development. The typical trick-or-treater in town does not generally find us here, but there have traditionally been a few who came to show off their costumes to "granny" and took a few minutes to work the rest of the apartments.

This year, I was prepared for up to 15 with pouches of Craisins (dried cranberries, similar to raisins). For whatever reason, there was nary a ghost or a ghoul tapping at my "chamber door."

Best regards,  4merCL

Normally we buy candy just in case but haven't had anyone come into our cul-de-sac. There are kids in the development (it's mixed with young, middle-aged and older) but the kids who came to our door yesterday were strangers.  They were cute, young and with an adult.

Costumes were pretty much run-of-the-mill. When my kids were young I created a prize-winning costume for my red-haired daughter. My mother-in-law had given my older kids animal print PJs and I took the leopard PJs and bought a plastic dog bone and turned my daughter into Pebbles Flintstone. She used the same costume for own her redheads years later. It wasn't as timely as the original but it worked.

As an aside, Arlene, Yuko said this year all the kids were in store-bought costumes, no homemade outfits this year.  I thought that was interesting, given the economy.  Or perhaps the parents splurged a little if they've been cutting back on other entertainment thruout the year...  connie

Sky..  I heard somewhere on the news that in Oregon where USC was playing (don't recall the town), they moved Halloween back a day to Fri night so that everyone could watch the big game against USC on Sat.  It turned out to be well worth it for them as USC got stomped, 47-20...  connie

Gretchen...  Yuko gave away just about everything that she bought so there's nothing left for me either.  Towards the end, she had to cut back on what she was giving cuz she was running out of stuff to give.  The early-birds got the best deal/selection.  Yuko gave a choice of a package of hot chocolate or a bag of microwave popcorn plus a choice of a full-size candy bar (several selections).  The latecomers got only one item and no selection...  connie

Arlene..  Like last year, we didn't seem to have many "imports" this year, just a few groups.  Most of the kids were locals...  connie

We only got a few, as usual.  But one group was really great.  Our neighbors up the street had a big party with a bounce house in the front yard, and then the whole group walked down the block.  The kids were pretty young, and one young lady was trick-or-treating for the very first time.  I think she was about two, dressed up as a snow princess.

There really aren't many children in our neighborhood, now that they tore down the apartment buildings at the end of the block.

I deliberately bought candy I don't like.  :)

Well, I did buy a bag of individual packages of Red Hots.  One of those makes a dandy dessert and is plenty enough for me.

Our town tests the Civil Defense alarms at noon on the first day of every month.  Someone forgot about the clock, apparently, because I hear the alarm at 1:05 p.m.

We have over a dozen various types of clocks and timers that needed to be manually reset.

I don't bother with the clock on my microwave or coffee pot, as I never depend on them to know the time, and I never set to coffee pot timer.  The pot brews so quickly there's not much point in setting it up on the timer.  Our wall clocks are atomic clocks, so they're a problem only when the battery is getting weak.  (A sure sign it's time to change the battery.)  I had three alarm clocks to set, but I haven't done but two so far.

>>Yuko said this year all the kids were in store-bought costumes, no homemade outfits this year.<<

Sometimes the store-bought costumes are cheaper than the homemade. I know my older daughter used to spend time and money making her kids costumes. My husband had to dress up for work so he used my cape and a mask. He was the Phantom of the Opera. Two of his colleagues collaborated: One was Don Quixote and the other was Rocinante. I guess it was kind of hard walking on all fours. <g> One year I went trick or treating to a few neighbors covered with a sheet but I gave up when one said, "Hi Arlene."

Considering the turnover here I don't know the locals. When I was Condo President I knew everyone.

Dot..  We use the timer on the coffee maker fairly often but I agree on the microwave.  Many of our timers are old VCRs that don't know the new DST dates.  I keep them synched to the cable box rather than to the broadcast signal time so I have them set to manual time rather than automatic...  connie
