Breeds are classified as 'most popular' due to very high registration numbers. Unfortunately, those same high numbers also mean a huge amount of indiscriminate breeding is being done by people looking to make a buck by selling pups, regardless of their quality, or more important, the lack thereof.

Most of us have a favorite breed, popular or not.  My favorite breed is the German Shepherd Dog, a breed I have lived with my entire 60 years. I love them because they are warm, devoted, protective but with the smarts to tell friend from foe, loving, highly intelligent, and maybe most important, they are super with kids of all ages. Their love for their human family is unquestionable. And they are so very beautiful to look at. A properly put together GSD is poetry in motion.  I suppose it's easy to tell how much I love them <g>.

Which breed is your favorite, and why? Please feel free to ramble, and attach a picture of your dog, if you have one! -merzi

I love most breeds.  However, my favorite is Beagles.  We first saw one when we lived in St. Croix and a neighbor had one.  Our boys loved her - as did the whole neighborhood.  She was so sweet.  Our boys wanted a Beagle when we moved a mile or so down the road.  We had to get one from the States.  He too was so sweet.  I swore I would not have another dog after he passed away, but .... we ended up with two rescues.  one was a full Beagle and the other was a mixed Beagle.

I love them because they are so sweet and when I see a Beagle puppy, my heart melts.  When they howl, you know they are Beagles.  No other dog sounds like that!

Without a doubt, Schnauzers.  I just have a new puppy.  My sis has owned them for 10 years.  They are fantastic dogs.  First, they never shed.  Second, they are SMART.  My new puppy is 7 weeks old.  I've had her for a week tomorrow, she is about 70% trained to go outside and potty, she is about 70% crate trained.  The last two nights she has slept in her crate from 11-7 with no soiling and no crying.  She has boundless energy and yet is not  hyper.  She comes when I call her and loves to be snuggled/kissed.  I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop.  Now I realize that she is doing well because I am consistent and staying on top of it.  After all, she is just a puppy of 7 weeks so I don't expect her to hold it for hours and hours.  I always praise her for going and she gets a treat when she goes outside.  She already runs to the kitchen and waits for her treat.

So far in a week she's only had 3 accidents, two of  which we my fault  because I lost track of time.

Tonight after I took her out she ran to the front door and patiently waited for me to open it.  We started on the leash today and that is one thing she really doesn't like.  But she is making an effort.

She's a minature by the way - versus a standard or Giant.

Here's a pic:

I guess the breed I have at the moment is my favorite...LOL....I have been owned by

2 German Shepherds

1 mixed poodle and  Shepherd

1 Mastiff

and 1 Schipperke that has owned me for the last 7 years.

She is bright, alert and a great source of fun and entertainment....She is my eyes and ears.....will let me know if anything and I do mean anything enters her yard....

All my dogs have brought me love and devotion.....and at the time they were the "Best".....

Nope, they don't shed at all.  I have a friend with a pug and I swear I love that dog to death but hair just COVERS you after a short period.

I think she's pretty cute.  I haven't had a dog in 20 years.  I raised and showed persian/himalayan cats, and I gave my little puppy a bath the other day and couldn't believe how fast her coat dried.  I wish my cats dried that fast!

I'm a schnauzer person too.  My last dog was a female Giant; she gave my husband and me the best 13 years of our lives.  Our first schnauzer was a standard black male, whom we rescued when he was eight, diabetic and almost blind.  We were humbled by the strength of his character and his ability to give such unconditional love despite all his hardships.

I know lots of miniature schnauzers; they seem to be the most popular these days.  I am employed as a dog nanny  (my current charge is a standard poodle), so I go to the local dog park at least once a day.  The park is divided into sections for large dogs and those under thirty pounds, and every day my poodle steps up to the small dog gate.  He thinks I'm frustratingly hard to train, but I keep telling him that he's never going to lose forty pounds.  This is the first poodle I've known, and he can be aloof to other dogs, especially those his size.  I go to the park to be in the company of dogs, and he goes to keep in touch with his human fan club.  He does like sociallizing at the fence with the little dogs, where I visit with my schnauzer friends.  One man comes every morning with five miniatures, all males and off lead; I tell him he's the bravest man in Florida, though all but one seem to be pretty cooperative.

Your baby pic is precious.  What is her name?  Thanks for not cropping her ears.

I've never had a dog whose ears were cropped.  Doesn't it hurt them to have them cropped?  Why do people crop them anyway?

When we were in Jacksonville I saw a fantastic Giant that lived in the complex were were renting at.  Black, and absolutely magnificent dog.

Although I've never had a poodle I understand they are considered to be highly intelligent.  It sounds like he thinks you just aren't getting it, LOL.

Alice

Her name is Sam.  Short for Samantha.  And you're probably going to flame me but yes I am getting her ears done.  I do not like the floppy ear look on schnauzers.  Part of what makes the schnauzer profile so nobile to me are the ears.  She is just too young to have it done now.  But I will be doing it around 12-14 weeks.  The vet that is doing it has been recommended to me by several top notch breeders that show, so I'll be using him.

She is sleeping in her crate totally at night now.  She goes down about 11 (when I can keep her up that late) and I get her up about 8 am, sometimes a little earlier.  She didn't like the leash, but I got one of the 'automatic" kinds that has a 20 foot lead and she likes that much better.

I am finding out she's a double dropper in the morning.  She goes first thing, runs in and chows down and then you'd better take her about 30 minutes later!  LOL  The rest of the day it's about 2-3 hours inbetween going out.

I just love her to death.

Schnauzers usually have their ears cropped, it is what makes them have the certain profile.  For instance:

I don't think it's flaming to state that IMO, your pictures bolster mine and Nancy's argument in favor of retaining your entire puppy.  I feel schnauzer ears are beautiful just the way they were sent from heaven.  Even in the show dog world, America is the lonely holdout on this issue, continuing to reward an outdated ideal based purely on fashion.  Veterinary schools, breed associations and even show judges are finally coming around, and an increasing number of dog owners are saying no to cosmetic mutilation.  And Nancy is right; of course it hurts them.

Schnauzers are a very intense breed, and even the smallest ones can be very intimidating when in a protective mode.  Both my standard and giant were very alpha, and their ears softened the appearance of their powerful necks when they were in that ten feet tall and bulletproof stance.  I can't count the number of times I've had people tell me they had always been intimidated by schnauzers, but that mine just seemed approachable.  Usually they couldn't articulate why, but I attribute that feeling as much to their softer appearance as to their excellent behavior.  I often hear the same sentiment expressed about Great Danes and Dobermans, just to name two other breeds whose reputations benefit from gorgeous natural ears.

I sense your mind is made up, but you have some time to reconsider this decision before you take the final step, and I know you want to be sure of doing what's best, for both of you.  BTW, have you ever noticed that schnauzer foot pads smell like popcorn?

Alice

I love all dogs we have a cocker/lab, beagle/mix, beagle, bassett, bassett/terrier, sheltie/beagle. Our beagle is very protective and loving. She can be a character though. When we let them outside we leave the screen door a jar and she opens it all the way and lets the other dogs in when she comes in. She is the 17" beagle and talk about a bed hog, she is one all the way. Wouldn't trade any of my dogs for the world. Since our kids are all grown up and moved away, our dogs are our kids. We even talk and treat them like they were human. Ha ha

My favorite breed is the boston terrier.  Ours is extremely intelligent, wonderful with our children and just a joy to have.  Bostons love being with their people....they think they're human.:)

Ours never barks.  When guests come over he runs to sniff their feet and waits to be petted but never barks.  He's a bit of a clown and loves to show off his fetching skills.  This is without a doubt the smartest and sweetest dog we've ever had.  We'll never be without a boston terrier in our family.:)

I beg to differ about the howl that the Beagle gives out. It is indeed quite a noise BUT I have three little mini long haired daxies. If someone should dare to walk in from of our house, should they dare to come to the door the howls that greet that person would awaken the dead! You see, a Daxie is a hound too, thus the name dachshund, short little legs, long body and a personality of a huge dog. We have one which was a rescue. He was a skinny dirty little thing when we got him through the rescue people. He was so shy due to not be with people, had a very sad life for his first year and a half. He would not snuggle into us, he would steal all the toys and hide them behind a chair, would gobble his food and then try to steal the others food. He was a mess. He had only three legs,, front right missing. Now he romps around, loves to be picked up, and, if he could speak would tell us he is in charge of all situations! If ever we get another it will also be a rescue. We are all "js" and have been for many dogs. This trio are Joshua, Jericho and Jerimiah. e

My son is nuts about Labadoodles, the newest breed for Guide Dogs.  One of his frat brothers trains them before they go to the Guide School- he lives in the dorm, goes to the cafeteria, classes, everywhere.  Anyway, it seems that Labdoodles are extremely intelligent, easy to train, does not shed and has less dander than most dogs.  It also does not have the tendency to develop hip problems.  They look like labs, but are more slender, exp. around the hips and their hair is just a little bit curly.  He says these are the latest things in "hybred" dogs.  They cost $5,000 (except for the guide dogs) and only in the first generation of breeding.

I'm really a cat person, but my son has 2 English Bulldogs, Harley and Wrinkles, and they are two of the nicest dogs I've ever been around...Beauty is not one of their best points but being layed back, gentle super family pet, certainly  makes up for it...We've often laughed and said, they are so ugly they're cute...We would highly recommend an English Bulldog as a family pet.....

I agree 100% with the schnauzer.  We are on our 4th one in 33 years and we wouldn't have any other breed.  They do not shed, they bond to the family, easy to take care, smart, etc.

im definitely more a cat person than a dog person, but i do love dogs too...i just dont have the time or space for a dog at this point in my life. i would love to have a dog someday though. i absolutely love italian greyhounds because i think they look like little deer. and i think puggles (beagle/pug mix) are cute too. im not sure i will ever have either of these 2 dogs though, because my boyfriend is definitely a dog person and likes to play and rough house with dogs...i dont think that kind of play would be good for the italian greyhound because i suspect they are more fragile than other bigger boned dogs. i might be able to talk him into a puggle...who knows. i think he is more of a lab or setter guy though. then again, id probably be the type to just go to the pound and pick out whichever mutt i click with the best. and of course, any dog i wind up with is gonna hafta realize that the cats rule the house...haha...
