I remember Halloween back when I was a kid. We always made our own costumes. I can remember being a hobo dressed in some of my daddy's clothes and putting some blacking on my face to resemble a 5 o'clock shadow. We always used what we had at home even when we played the part of a princess.

When my kids were small, I made many of their costumes. In fact, I think I made them all. I remember when I dressed them as Raggedy Ann and Andy. I used a lot of the scrap material and only bought a little to make the costume. I even made their red wigs from yarn.

Now, it seems many of the kids buy their costumes. I know Liz, my granddaughter wants to be Ariel. Hard to make a mermaid suit without spending as much as the costume will cost in the stores.

What's happened to the fun of creating your own costume? Has creativity dropped off the face of the earth in favor of store bought costumes?

Yes, it has, but for several reasons, IMHO.   Back in the 1950's, when I did my halloweening,  most of us kids had a lot more free time, and we had stay at home mom's who helped us make those costumes.  I remember having more fun making those things than wearing them.  Our access to entities that we wanted to make was very limited when compared to today's standards, so some of my family enjoyed just making a costume that represented a regular animal-they loved doing the cow.

Wouldn't it be something if we had a pre halloween day....stay at home and make your costume day?

Today, most mothers work, unemployment aside, and don't have time to make costumes.  It was more interesting to look at the costumes of those who came around on Halloween when the costumes were home made.

And, in my city, the religious right is making sounds about Halloween being used to exemplify and honor Satan.  I know of a few parents who a rethinking the whole concept of Halloween.

You would think that we could come up with instant, or easier/quicker to make costumes.

What a bunch of hooey! They need only to 'google' halloween to read the actual history of the day. It's actually more Christian and Celtic than they'd want to admit. What's with the religious right that they have to have something to complain about? I'm starting to worry about the level of stupidity in these groups. They'll believe anything their pastors tell them rather than to investigate something themselves.

If parents want to rethink the whole concept of Halloween, let them begin with the concept of ringing doorbells and asking for candy! The kids don't need to do anything other than ring that bell and shout 'trick or treat'.
Here in Holland the kids come around on the 11th of November (Saint Maarten's Day) and carry lanterns. They ring the doorbell and SING a SONG for their treats. That means they have to learn a couple of songs and get out there and sing for their supper!

Sorta the ways kids are with their parents when they are growing up-a simple faith?

Right.  Except kids haven't got a fully formed frontal cortex yet.

I can think of other reasons for the kids to not participate:

1.  No chocolates, no tooth decay.

2.  MOre time to study on that weekend.

3.  Less kids being hit by cars, leaving press reporters more time to worry the number of soldier deaths in Afghanistan.

4.  No need to irradiate the candy, lower power consumed, no glowing radio technicians or candy.

5.  You don't get to meet your neighbor, finally.
