Is there a gadget on the market which can boost the reception of Wireless signals in an area where signals are weak?

I'm looking to have it on the laptop side for boosting the reception of low WiFi signals from the router when further away from it than normal or when there are obstructions to a strong signal.

Marty,

I just read an article in our local newspaper today called Low-Tech Fixes for High-Tech Problems - from the NY Times.  One of the topics covered was "Longer Wi-Fi Reach."  (Go to page 2 of the online article.)

Thank, but while interesting, it won't work for for my needs.

Per the article:  "Place the completed reflector — a small, curved piece of metal that reflects radio waves just like a satellite TV dish — behind your Wi-Fi router."

I don't have access to the router, and need something which is portable and I can use on the receiving side.

No...

Think about why.  Even if such a device existed, in order to communicare properly, both send and receive need to be boosted.  Boosting one side only does not work...

I agree with John B, the simple solution would be a repeater

Otherwise, a high-gain directional antenna IF your wifi has the jack for an external antenna, but they are NOT going to be real cheap, short of the homemade Pringle Can type ones (Google for them), but even those require a way to plug the antenna into the computer WiFi - and that may be a deal breaker IF you don't have a way to connect that external antenna.  Of course, in that situation you could BUY another WiFi Solution (USB attached?) that DOES let you connect an external antenna

Since you have a laptop, I would BET that it DOESN'T have a connector for an external antenna.  In that case, maybe a PCMCIA WiFi card that DOES have either an external antenna connection OR has a external antenna (if external antenna, then the parabolic reflector might be useable)

Might even be worth looking for an uptodate driver for the internal card -- worked for many on the wireless ethernet card in Averatec laptops.

OTOH, a yagi or LP antenna on either end does give an effective increase on both send and receive levels...

Cheapest way to improve signal level going!

Yeah, it doesn't do much if you wander around the yard whilst computing<G>

OTOH, there's a nice spot about 250 feet west of my house overlooking the lower pasture that would make for good site for a gazebo one day... a cantenna connected to one of my spare Linksys routers would give me good connectivity between fetching pitchers of iced lemonade<VBG>

I'm still waiting for the Radioshack to disco the high gain whips they carried for the Linksys... there's one set left in my local (franchise) store and a 3 db gain would do a world of good here<G>

Thanks, John.

The Mini looks neat, and for only $49, may fit the bill.  I'm not really sure about it until I do some more research since it looks like you have to register it with them where you're using it.  If so, I'm trying to use it for my condo in Jamaica where we have WiFi in the building, but the signal is pretty weak. There are many hours I can't get connected, and I get knocked off quite a bit.  I wonder if I have to register it from here, or can I do it where I live in PA, and just bring it with me when I'm here.

However, I suppose a repeater is the way to go.

I did some research on that mini and it appears that it's no longer available from the company, the closest replacement shows $149.

I'm sure that there are others.

Ouch, that's a little steeper than I think I want to go for this.

Thanks for letting me know.  It's a shame since the unit looked good on the surface.

Now that I know I'm looking for a portable (small) repeater, I'll do some more research when I get back home.   Too slow a connection from here in JA to spend the time doing it.

PMJI at the end of the line but for a repeater to be useful for you would you not have to find a location in your complex where the reception is good and locate the repeater there? Is that possible? If not then this from the second link John B gave would seem to apply:

<< How does a WiFi repeater work? Simple really when we think about it. It just takes in the WiFi signal from a remote radio device and then blasts it out locally. However, there are a few problems with this.

First of all, very often, radio devices fail to repeat if the make/models differ.

Secondly, it is essential for the repeater to get a good, reliable and stable signal from the radio first device. And if this fails to happen, then it ends up repeating rubbish or even worse, just slows the system down with repeated resend messages.  >>

No problem. Just as a thought, have you looked into a 3G card and service?

Not good if you want to access your own network  but it would give you the freedom to work almost anywhere.

While normally a good idea, this is for use in my condo in Jamaica and I am only here a few weeks per year.  I could subscribe to cable for internet (already have it for TV), but I would have to pay for it all year round, and it's not worth the cost when I'm not in JA.

Thanks for the tip, though.

Maybe!  I have 2 condos, and the one I'm in now has a 'decent' signal, but I have to be on the verandah to get them.  Next door, It's terrible, and that's where I'm set up to work while here.   If the repeater can pick up the signal if put in my 2nd apt, then I should be able to catch the signal where I normally work inside.
