It's easy getting new gadgets in your door, but getting old ones out the door can sometimes be more difficult.

Engadget
offers a guide to recycling programs: individual companies, wireless carriers, retail stores, and general and governmental resources.

A good and timely reminder. Recycling keeps the toxic parts out of your local landfill.

In addition to the national resources one should look for local places as well. Where I volunteer they take almost any type of electrical/electronic device, refurbish where feasable, and the really dead/outmoded items are stripped, seperated into components so the metals can be compacted, the plastics sorted and shredded, etc. Useable items then go out to low income families at little or no cost to the recipient.

The advantage is a local place accepting items 6 days a week and assisting the community as well.

I wish we had a similar place somewhere in my local area.

I can't believe that, in the vast LA area, there aren't a dozen or more. I suggest you search harder(g).

Our city has a recycling center that takes e-waste two days a week.  We have gotten rid of a lot of computer junk there.

Some post offices have prepaid mailers for recycling cell phones, PDAs and other small electronics.  I sent a couple of ancient pagers and a dead cell phone their way.

One of the collection sites is not far from where we live.

Collection places for disposal, yes, there are quite a few. Places like where you volunteer, where they refurbish and resell stuff, those I haven't found. Goodwill Industries sells some computer stuff but all I have seen is circa 1990s stuff.

As I was telling Dennis, collection places for disposal there are quite a few.

Places like where he volunteers, where they take the stuff in and refurbish it and then make it available again to low income people, no. I haven't seen any like that.

I burns me to take a perfectly good working device that has just outlived its prime turned into raw materials when it could be used by someone else.

Offer the device on your local Freecycle group.  http://freecycle.org/

I recently offered an old, non-working Toro snowblower, and I was very surprised to have 22 people asking  for it.  Had figured I'd be lucky to find ONE taker.  <g>

Our local Freecycle is plagued by scavengers that jump on EVERYTHING and then put it up on yard sales or Craig's list. Items last about 2 minutes after posting.
I want to give the stuff to people that NEED IT, not to resellers.

I have given stuff on Freecycle before but no more.

The moderators are SUPPOSED to track that stuff and remove those members... when they have enough moderators to do the job...

Unfortunately the bar is so high for their training requirements that people who just want to help and really don't want to LIVE on the forum probably won't bother<G>

I have complained to the moderators before but no dice. Sometimes I think that some of the moderators are "in" on the scam.

I 'planted' a couple of juicy items and I had replies BEFORE they appeared on the list. <g>

Each area is run by a different crew, but it appears they've got stuff in common<G>

It used to be that Goodwill did that kind of work, but I don't know if they still do.

That would burn me as well. Recently I've handled fairly decent machines that were dropped off - one had a bad graphics card and the other a dead P/S. Repaired, fitted with a fresh copy of XPPro, and out the door. Seems as if computers are becoming disposables these days.

Well, then bypass Freecycle and put the items on Craigslist [this is the correct spelling] yourself. <g>

BTW, there was an interesting article about Craigslist in last month's WIRED:

Why Craigslist Is Such a Mess

WOW... no wonder.

I have only posted one item in Craigslist and it sold in a couple of days but I had to deal with a bunch of idiots for a week. Never again.

Yep, with NEW desktops going for under $300, computers have become just like VCRs, viewed as appliances that are NOT worth repairing, so the mind set is to just dump it and buy a new one

That plus places like Goodwill have set the bar so high on what they will TAKE in on computers that tons of older computers are not accepted, even if they are still working fine and useable

People who buy computers might think that way, but people who build them don't.  :)
