You work hard on researching and gathering information on your ancestors. Do you display what you find in a Family Tree. Maybe in a picture frame? Do you keep an updated website for anyone to see what you have found so far? Or, do you just keep everything stored away?

Website, thanks to TMG and John Cardinal's superb program Second Site:

       http://www.jgrussell.com/famtree.htm

To the Second Site materials I've added a message board, links, a blog, copies of photos, letters, records and land records, newspaper articles and census records, info on military service, a calendar and more. It's gotten me a lot of contacts from other family members and a lot of info I would never have had otherwise.

I have two large charts displayed on a hallway wall.  Each can display up to 23 generations - though not that many for every family.  I began a chart for each of my parents, to extend the amount displayed for each family.  And around those charts, I have hung photos of some of my relatives.

We have a couple of websites on some of the lines. Displaying mine? No, "I am waiting until I have a few more generations", is that still a legitimate excuse???

Thanks so much. It surely is a fun thing to do. But I am behind in getting new material up there... hope I can carve out a few hours this weekend.

I'm always unpleasantly surprised to discover that data I know I have recorded in my notebooks has not yet made it to TMG...

I tend to be fairly good about recording things in TMG; getting things from there to the website is a bit more problematic.

Your question is an interesting one, I display information on a private web site for other family members to see and interact with but I also have binders filled with information.  The trick is to keep it all sorted in plastic, do NOT get behind.  I go back through emails sent to me with family information that did not seem to connect at the time, and I make copious notes when meeting  with family members. After six years of digging I found a half sister I knew nothing about and twin cousins adopted at birth.  This led to family reunions with a day of research, trading photos, visiting cemeteries and finally connecting the correct information to add to our tree.

Enjoy what you are doing and remember it takes time.  Have fun with the skeletons in the closet, I am sure you will find them.

Jean, luckily I had saved all the email and letters I had scanned in on my hard drive. To eliminate so much paper, as I have about 20 tons of it on my families, I finally burned a couple of discs with the information on them for respective families, and made copies of these discs. This helped me a lot.

Hi,

I'm new to this forum, but I have been doing genealogy for the past four years. I display my tree on the Tribal pages. Its free and so easy. You can store so much and invite people, plus photes. My family is the Messer and McCall of Tenn,N.C.,S.C., and Georgia. When I get new info it very easy to add. When someone visits they can e-mail me if they have any info to add or questions on a certain line. It displays all your surnames your connected to and so much more. Fill free to visit my sight and check it out.http://www.tribalpages.com/tribes/apanthertstalks

Thanks

Tammy that sounds like an excellent way to get your family tree seen, and get information in return. Glad you found a way to get it out there!

Thanks Pam,

I still have alot of info to put in, but with two groups I have, I also get to keep intouch with connecting families and distant cousins. We also set up reunions in the counties where the family started. We each bring a dish and our family trees and photos, with copies to share. And we share family stories to add to our family trees. Its great!

Thanks again for repling,

Tammy at apantherstalks@netscape.net

I, personally, compiled a book for my family, but I walked into a title and abstract company a couple of years ago where the owner had his family tree on a seven foot, three paneled. screen. It was beautiful!

Several of the genealogy software packages have the ability to print lovely family trees from the data that has been entered.  I have seen some at the various genealogy conferences that are just beautiful, and easy to follow, as well.  Many of them include photographs, if they have been stored in the genealogy data - and the picture can be of something other than a photo - for instance, a copy of a signature, photo of a house he lived in, map of the area where he lived - whatever graphic one can find that is in some way connected to the person.  It's very hard to find photos earlier than about 1850, unless one came from a wealthy family that could afford to have portraits painted, and many of those no longer exist - or do not belong to the descendants of the subject.

John Scarborough, father of the famous portrait artist John Gaines Scarborough, supported his family by painting portraits of people who lived in the PeeDee region of South Carolina in the years close to 1800.  He was quite a portrait artist himself, and the painting still in existence are greatly prized.  But during the 1930s, many of the people in that area had to sell almost anything that could help them to survive, and paintings of ancestors were often sold.  And it was not unusual for the purchasers to take the paintings home and tell everyone that it was a painting of one of their own ancestors.  Several were known to have walked out carrying the paintings, and deciding which ancestor was to be chosen to go with that painting.
