When you say that you tried the "Windows route" in attempting to change the font size... did you try to change the screen resolution at all? Try setting the resolution to 800 by 600.

I had made two changes at one time and that was the real problem. I
took them both out and then changed the dpi and it works fine. The
wife is happy again (and that is the real reason for life).
