When I retrieve my CompuServe mail from Outlook Express, I keep getting this error message:

"Message number 1 could not be retrieved. Account: 'pop.csi.com', Server: 'pop.csi.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR system failure:
IOException while retrieving content for item 6940', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800420CD"

OE says it's downloading 3 or 4 messages, but only 2 or 3 appear and I get that error message. I've gone on the CompuServe webmail site and there are no messages there. It appears all my messages, except one, are bypassing the server and going right to my Outlook Express account. Could there be a corrupt message stuck on the server. How can this be corrected? I have no problems with my other 2 email accounts using POP3.

You need to call your local helpline number to get your mailbox reset.

Go here to find a local number for your part of the world

Everything works now and I didn't do anything!!! I guess it was the server and CompuServe finally fixed the problem.

Thanks.

Hi Helen (and all other Classic Webmail users),

In case a @compuserve.com mailbox like yours should need to be reset in the future:

I'm afraid that what Iain here has told you is out-of-date. That is, all the Compuserve local helpline numbers around the world, including the 1-800-848-8990 number in the United States, *no longer* will help any Classic Webmail users like you (with the @compuserve.com address) at all!

Instead, in cases where a Classic Webmail mailbox is broken, the way to contact the Mail Team to get it fixed would be via the websuiteblog@aol.com email address.

Wayne

This is a truely dreadful situation.

CI$ is basically a POS.  No support, no communication.  Just be glad it works - sometimes.

I have several email addresses, all connect and download just fine - except CI$.  It started about 2 weeks ago - I program with Outlook minimized on the toolbar.  About 10 times a day I get a dialog from Outlook - It says in essence that CI$ cannot recognize my password.  After several retries all is fine.

In the sake of common decency, and manners, CI$ could atleast put a banner on this forum - or send a broadcast message that they are having problems.

It's not about me being a whiney person, but rather about some basic, human communication to let folks know that they are working on / aware of a problem.

Yes, I know you are 'just volunteers', but one way communication is the worst.

Since it's free, am I asking too much?  Should I be content with what ever shoddy crap they peddle as an email system?  Should I expect something  more for all the years I paid mucho dollars in connect fees?

I have already given you a link to use in troubleshooting this problem

http://community.compuserve.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?tsn=1&nav=messages&webtag=ws-help&tid=184821

have you used it?

As Wayne posted elsewhere

Instead, in those cases where your Classic mailbox appears to be broken, and needs to be fixed, you need to contact Compuserve's Mail Team at websuiteblog@aol.com

This is not a general problem with the CompuServe POP3 mail service. I access my mailbox using Thunderbird and it works just fine.

Have you tried logging on at http://webmail.compuserve.com ?

I read the KB article that you suggested.  It has to do with Exchange.  I don't use Exchange.

It's working OK today.   What a deal.

Outlook is part of Exchange.

Something just occurred to me... do you have Outlook set to retrieve from your mailbox every minute? While you have said that this problem has cleared up, if it happens again you should try setting a longer interval for retrieval, like once every 5 minutes.
