I have been trying for our entire marriage (18 years) to get/keep the finances under control. Sometimes the problem has been me, but more often it was DH. We have refinanced or made home equity loans at least 5 times in 17 years. I work 2 jobs. Up until recently, DH had a very low end job (pizza delivery) - due to injuries he was unable to continue the type of work he was trained in. I really need to learn this, and how to pay down the debt. I have thought about taking more control of DH's paycheck now that he's no longer working for a cash business - though I hate to be in that position (I'm not his mommy and doing so allows him to NOT accept responsibility) but may need to do it for my own survival & future. I'm sure there are things we can do without, however it always seems to be me that does the "doing without". But I have also done my share of impulse spending. This summer, when DH got a new job, I contemplated giving up my 2nd job, but find I still need the extra $$. So right now, my goal is to get the spending down a bit, and use whatever I save to pay down the CC debt. When those balances are at $0. then I can consider quitting the 2nd job.

One of the things suggested to help with trying to get spending under control is to write everything down.  I've always kept a good checkbook register, and I enter & categorize things in MS Money, but it has helped to keep a weekly tally of all spending - cash, checks, debit and credit card.  I can't get CC balances down if I'm still making purchases.

One thing to remember is you can't borrow your way out of debt.

IF you have need to use a CC for certain purchases, then keep ONE of them paid off every month, and use only that one for current purchases.  Pay off the remaining CCs with your additional earnings.

I hope things have gotten better for you. I have been there myself!

I`m there again now...

I have cut back on alot of spending due to economy...My hours getting cut etc....

A good way to start is:

1. Make your own laundry soap, and cleaning products....It`s cheap and Eco friendly!

2. We grill out alot using a charcoal grill with little charcoal and lots of old branches from the yard....

3. Check price per unit on all items and compare with sales adds...Before stocking up at Costco or Sam`s check sales add and do the math..Don`t forget your coupons...

4. Old torn towels and torn bed sheets are great! Washable as well. Stop buying paper towels......

5. Go to bed 1hr. earlier. Saves electric....

6. Gas up your car at night. More bang for your buck. The gas thickens in cooler weather.

7. Car pool when possible...( bike it in the nice weather!)

8. Turn the heat way down at night....We have an electric heater fan from Walmart that we use in one of the bedrooms.  During the gas crunch it was a big help!

9. Save rain water to water plants. I put plastic storage bins under the drain pipes and pour the water into a(clean) garbage can with a tight lid.....(put a drop of bleach in to kill larve before it can grow)

10. Thrift stores, and garage sales vs. New.  Most of us can live with used! You would be surprised at what you can find at these places.....

11. Grow your own veges and fruit...Get some of your neighbors involved. One grows the tomatoes and peppers, and another pumpkins and squash, I have one type of fruit tree and next door they have another..I also grow strawberries....Do some canning and freezing!

12. Crockpots and electric appliances are great cost cutters too... I have done a 10lb. Turkey in a 7qt. oval crockpot for Thanksgiving! Came out awesome! We have also done the turkey out on the grill...

13. Hang your clothes up to dry. I do this in winter as well when my kids are at school. I bought clothes line that I run from one bunkbed to another...

I started looking up things on the internet on how people lived during The Great Depression....You would be surprised what people did and they made it through!

Being an old skinflint I have never need the services of a person advocating money saving strategies. However I listen to a fellow named Dave Ramsey on the radio frequently. Based on the calls he receives his suggestions must have some success with his listeners. If listening is not sufficient then he does sell some books on the subject and also conducts what he calls "Financial Peace University". You might want to take the course.

Research the whole thing at:

http://www.daveramsey.com/

If you can catch him on the radio in your area he might also provide guidance in educating Dear Husband too.

Dave Ramsey is also on the Fox Business Network(cable TV). His shows there are in the evening hours.

Good to know but being that old skinflint I have never had cable. Just me and my antenna. Leads to a sheltered life as well.<BWG>

Being where I live here in mountains of central Arizona over the air means receiving one station from Flagstaff. So that is the reason that I have DirecTV. If I lived in Prescott itself I could get all of the Phoenix stations via repeaters over the air.

It is true that since the changeover to HD we get 12 channels here over the air. Tis the flatlands after all. I am originally from a small berg back in the hills of West (By God) Virginia so I know the difficulty you are experiencing.
